They came from the land of ice and snow… to perform as part of our fourth Basement Tapes session and we couldn’t have more pleased with Figurines’ static-charged studio performance. The Copenhagen-based indie quintet featuring - Christian Hjelm (vocals / guitar), Jens Ramon (keys), Claus S. Johansen (guitars), Kristian Volden (drums) and Mads Kjærgaard (bass) – were just finishing up their U.S. Fall tour when they graciously took time out after their Chicago Schubas show to record these exclusive tracks for you.
If you haven’t yet heard their most recent release, When The Deer Wore Blue, you really need to… as it stretches out beyond their early alt-rock leanings and magnificently melds modern indie rock with both ‘60s pop and an embraceable dose of eclecticism. For this particular session these five young Danes delivered three remarkable versions from this record (“Let’s Head Out,” “Drove You Miles” and “Good Old Friends”). When asked if they could dig up an older chestnut as well, they happily obliged with a spirited take of “Continuous Songs” from their 2005 Skeleton album; a song which also shed light into some of their earlier influences.
While much of their Scandinavian musical brethren may look back to Nuggets-era garage rock and ‘60s punk for inspiration, Figurines instead incorporate only shadings and light hues of their past influences and have created something refreshingly new. You’ll definitely be hearing more from this talented Danish group in the future. – Tony Bonyata
