Just weeks after the release of their fifth full-length release, The Wishes and The Glitch, Say Hi (formerly Say Hi To Your Mom) cleared enough time in their demanding tour schedule to drop by for this arresting session.
Led by the indie-rock act’s creative fountainhead, Eric Elbogen, the entire touring band that loaded-in for this particular session consisted only of the Seattle-by-way-of-Brooklyn singer/musician and his accompanying drummer Westin Glass. While there may have only been two in the studio – with Elbogen handling guitar, keys and vocal duties over pre-programmed synthesized sequences and rhythmic textures - the sounds generated seemed more like a full-on rock ensemble.
The duo performed four songs from The Wishes and The Glitch (“Toil & Trouble,” “Spiders,” “Northwestern Girls” and “Back Before We Were Brittle,” the latter which we’ll be offering as a free bonus track in the near future), along with their own unique take on John Lennon’s “I’m So Tired” from The Beatles’ 1968 White Album, which was also featured on Say Hi’s second effort Numbers & Mumbles. All of these songs and sounds seemed to embody not only the fertile creative spirit of The Beatles from that period in their career, but they also incorporated some of the best elements of the ‘80s (The Smiths, The Cure, et al) in with their own modern indie-rock sensibilities.
If you’re not yet familiar with these guys, then let these four great exclusive tracks serve as an informal welcome. Come on in… grab these free songs… and say hi. –Tony Bonyata
