Louisville may be best known for the Kentucky Derby, baseball bats and mints juleps, but with a rising number of musicians making a name for themselves well beyond the confines of their city and state borders it may have to add music as well to its list of famous exports. Bands such as Slint, VHS or Beta, The Watson Twins, My Morning Jacket and, more recently, CABIN have all called Louisville home at one time or another.
We were lucky enough to have the latter, CABIN, stop by for a recent session, where Noah Hewett-Ball (vocals / guitars / keys), Sarah Welder (violin / vocals / keys), Billy Lease (bass) and Dave Chale (drums) performed five remarkable tracks – nailing each one of them with conviction in a mere single take.
In addition to performing the atmospheric, near-epic opening track from their 2005 Govern The Good Life debut, “In The Wake Of” (which we’ll be offering as a free bonus download a bit later), the Kentucky quartet also delivered wonderful takes of “Cover Your Eyes,” “I Was Here” and, with prog-rock precision, “Musical Seats,” all from their 2007 Machine Records I Was Here EP. The real surprise, however, came when the opening strains of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” flooded through the studio monitors. Their version was faithful enough to the original, yet still incorporated enough of their own DNA to successfully turn this dated, guilty-pleasure from the ‘80s into a sunny piece of guilt-free modern indie pop. If these Louisvillians manage to keep up the momentum displayed both on record and for this particular session, it shouldn’t be long before they’ll be ruling the music world, at the very least. –Tony Bonyata
