Keith Sweat Weekend Report: V103 turns twenty, The Verve Pipe singer solo
Friday, January 2, 2009

V103's twentieth anniversary concert series continues with a double bill featuring a funk-focused old timer and an R&B crooner for the ages. Maze featuring Frankie Beverly is sure to jam well into the wee hours with its signature grooves and the velvety voice of the familiar front man. Prior to that troupe's performance, expect a spirited set from Keith Sweat, the solo star also known for his time in LSG (also featuring Johnny Gill and the late great Gerald Levert). (Worth a shot - Friday at Arie Crown Theater- Chicago, IL: www.V103.com).

Christmas may be over, but Trans-Siberian Orchestra is hanging onto the spirit well into the winter. Though the touring titans have already been to town countless times before, each year finds its concert spectacle growing by leaps and bounds, with sounds of the season literally exploding thanks to some smoke, lasers, and pyrotechnics. This show could easily give AC/DC or KISS Brain Vander Arka run for the production money, but those who are on the fence should weight the spectacle against their interest in Yuletide tunes translated through a symphonic rock lens. (Worth a shot - Saturday at Allstate Arena- Rosemont, IL: www.tickemaster.com).

Not a day goes by when The Verve Pipe's "The Freshman" doesn't get played on alternative rock radio, though by now, front man Brain Vander Ark is surely sick of it. In fact, he's been known to tease fans from stage by plucking out the chords to The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony" and claiming them as his own, simply due to the public's constant confusion between the two similarly named groups. However, this intimate appearance (that kicks off a weekly residence) won't just be about that band, but rather a fairly emotive solo career that's earned the troubadour a burgeoning grassroots fan base. (Worth a shot - Monday at Schubas- Chicago, IL: www.schubas.com).
Take That Street Week: Take That attack, Van on vinyl
Monday, December 29, 2008

In America, British pop group Take That really only had one major hit in the form of "Back For Good." But the vocal powerhouses did birth the future star Robbie Williams and continue to milk that association even though he's long graduated to superstardom. Though there's nothing too terribly tragic about Circus (Universal), it's guilty of a few boy band cliches and odd examples of grown men trying to reignite their libido from ten years ago.

With the slew of recent re-masters on CD, Van Morrison faithful will also likely be interested in the 180 gram vinyl pressing of His Band and the Street Choir (Rhino). The 1970 project followed the smash success of Astral Weeks and Moondance, finding prominenceVan Morrison on its own accord for cuts like "Give Me a Kiss," "Crazy Face," and most noticeably, the now classic "Domino." Even for those who already own the songs in some other format, there's no feeling like opening a lush gatefold and popping this puppy on a turntable.

Speaking of vinyl, a brand new DVD dissects every angle of that bi-gone era. It's a Vinyl World After All (MusicAngle.com) finds Michael Fremer telling viewers how to clean, store, handle and collect records, also touching on the manufacturing process for the 21st century. Parts may lean a little towards the sleepy side, but expect an informative journey for the veteran vinyl fan to novices alike.
