The Fray Weekend Report: Kravitz helps Labelle, Return of The Fray
Friday, January 9, 2008

Three-plus years is ages to wait for a relatively new act attempting to establish longevity, but the fact that The Fray had so many singles off its 2005 debut certainly accounted for the delay. Thus far buzz has been brewing for the group's second effort (a self-titled disc on Columbia), though faithful fans will be able to tell firsthand on this pre-street date performance. Though the intimate Metro was where these piano poppers first played in town, the guys have since graduated to the arena level, marking the return to their roots sell out in seconds. (Worth a shot - Friday at Metro- Chicago, IL: www.metrochicago.com).

What does it take to resurrect the careers of three aging divas who haven't performed together in over thirty years? Well, a new record deal with Verve, plus powerhouse producers like Lenny Kravitz and Wyclef Jean are certainly steering R&B girl group Labelle in the right direction.Labelle Of course, Patti leads the pack in all her over the top glory, but she's also joined by the equally soulful Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash. Expect tunes from 2008's Back To Now and golden oldies like "Lady Marmalade." (Worth a shot - Saturday at Chicago Theatre- Chicago, IL: www.jamusa.com).

With every year that passes since 1974's opus The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, it appears more and more unlikely that Genesis will reunite with Peter Gabriel. Thankfully The Musical Box isn't just the next best option, but literally recreates the art rockers' old school shows word for word, note for note and even with the original set pieces. Each tour finds the tribute band exploring a different album with this particular outing honing in on the first ever Phil Collins-led endeavor A Trick of the Trail, alongside several early career classics. (Bet your life - Thursday and Friday, January 16 at The Vic- Chicago, IL: www.jamusa.com).
Glasvegas Street Week: Glasvegas from Glasgow, Double round of records
Monday, January 5, 2009

In Scotland, England and most of Europe, Glasvegas is already gigantic, but it remains to be seen if the alternative rockers can capture American audiences. Early online previews of its self-titled debut indicate a stylistic cross between Half Man Half Biscuit and U2, while the group's thunderous revelry occasionally evokes Oasis. This Columbia Records collection (released late last year) already landed on several critic's picks lists, including Mojo, Q and NME, so American anticipation is already higher than most import acts.

With a tour on the books for early '09, it's only fitting for Animal Collective to have a new project hitting streets. Though the group's ninth full-length won't be hitting streets on standard CD until later this month, Animal Collective fans do score a sneak peek this week with Merriweather Post Pavilion (Domino). Expect a continuation of the group's delightfully unpredictable chaos and cohesion that's sure to strike up additional indie acclaim.

Even after three projects, The Fireman may not jump out as an immediately familiar band name, but the players are marquee names all across the globe. For starters, there's no denying Paul McCartney's vocals (albeit bluesier than ever before in some instances), while the ambient electronics have producer Youth written all over them. Electric Arguments (ATO) may have already released on CD, but this vinyl pressing will make the avant-garde artwork come to life in colorful ways that could never be contained in a little booklet.
