Third Eye Blind Weekend Report: Third Eye Blind reunited, Fischerspooner's dance decadence
Friday, May 29, 2009

Besides a handful of contagious (though ridiculously overplayed) hits, Third Eye Blind wasn't really missed upon its hiatus in 2003. Now six years older and even less relevant than the first time around, the trio is about to turn in a new studio CD called Ursa Major and coast off past glories. But it's probably wiser to skip the show and simply download "Semi-Charmed Life" and "Never Let You Go," the only two worthwhile tracks from its bloated career thus far. (Fan club only - Friday at Riviera Theatre- Chicago, IL: www.jamusa.com and Saturday at Riverside Theatre- Milwaukee, WI: www.pabsttheater.org).

Even if Entertainment is the third CD by electronic outfit Fischerspooner, the tour in support of the project will only be the second time American audiences can experience the over the top theatrical act. As for the pulsating sounds packed within the project, expect a modern day club record that falls somewhere between a more sophisticated version of the Scissor Sisters mixed with an updated concoction of Kraftwerk.Fischerspooner Outside of the tracks themselves, the 2009 outing will update its eye-catching combination of outrageous fashion, out of this world art and towering theatrics. (Bet your life - Saturday at Metro- Chicago, IL: www.metrochicago.com).

He may be solo these days, but John Fogerty continues to play the Creedence Clearwater Revival hits in concert and seems to be writing in that swamp rock direction across current material. His latest album Revival is a snarling, riff-oriented affair, backed by the guitar slinger's signature voice that shows minimal signs of age even after four decades on the road. Add in group classics like "Bad Moon Rising," "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" or "Fortunate Son" and catching the enduring rabble rouser is a no-brainer. (Bet your life - Saturday at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino- Hammond, IN: www.thevenue-chicago.com).
Marilyn Manson Street Week: Is Manson still shocking?, Krall on DVD
Monday, May 25, 2009

At this stage of his career, the novelty of Marilyn Manson has long worn off, leaving the mainstream masses indifferent and only core fans still on the shock rocker's side. The latter half will be pleased to know he's reunited with longtime collaborator Twiggy Ramirez across The High End of Low (Nothing), though it's more of the same old same old, outside of a slightly more positive attitude. "I think my life definitely ended and began," says Manson. "The record sounds very final, but it's almost optimistic- though that feels like a strange word to use. It's a phoenix from the fire and a redemption resurrection."

Contemporary jazz superstar Diana Krall is on tour all summer, though for those hoping for a sneak preview, there's her new DVD Live In Rio (Eagle Rock Entertainment). The project comes on the heels of her studio CD Quiet Nights and again continues in her classy and sometimes sultry disposition. Of course,Diana Krall there's no substitute for seeing the singer on an actual stage, but this concert collection is the closest suitable substitute to date.

Long before Medeski, Martin & Wood or the jazzy jam scene in general, Return To Forever was tearing up the experimental circuit. In fact, it was twenty-five years ago since the super group comprised of keyboardist Chick Corea, bassist Stanley Clarke, guitarist Al Di Meola and drummer Lenny White last toured together, though as the DVD Live at Montreux 2008 (Eagle Rock Entertainment) indicates, the foursome's innovative fusions are still in tact. The brand new visual concert collection comes on the heels of the double CD of the same title with a similar set list loaded with improvisational ingenuity.
