Emmylou Harris Weekend Report: Three Girls and Their Buddy, Kanye comes home
Friday, June 5, 2009

The name of this tour ("Three Girls and Their Buddy") might not jump off the page, but the performers are amongst the most innovative and acclaimed in all of folk history. Headliner Emmylou Harris returns to Ravina with fellow troubadours Patty Griffin and Shawn Colvin, plus their sole male pal Buddy Miller (a frequent Harris collaborator and solo star in his own right). (Bet your life - Sunday at Ravinia- Sunday: www.ravinia.org).

The Mac may be back, but the band is touring without a new record, instead focusing on nothing but the hits. It's certainly a nostalgic gesture sure to stimulate the economy of Stevie Nicks and company, but there sure are plenty of sing-a-longs on tap including "Dreams," "Go Your Own Way," "The Chain," "Gypsy" and dozens more. Of course, the bulk of the concert is sure to come from 1977's classic Rumours,Kanye West but it's still unclear if the group can replicate that magic in the studio these days. (Worth a shot - Monday at Bradley Center- Milwaukee, WI: www.ticketmaster.com).

For the first time since Dr. Donda West passed away in 2007, her son Kanye West is hosting a benefit concert for the foundation she formed. All proceeds from the "Stay In School" show will go toward the Kanye West Foundation, which encourages education and literacy in the inner city. Outside of a performance from the Chi-town rapper, fans who purchase a VIP Package earn entrance to a pre-show reception, plus meet and greet passes. (Worth a shot - Thursday at Chicago Theatre- Chicago, IL: www.ticketmaster.com).
DMB Street Week: DMB is back, Buckley remembered yet again
Monday, June 1, 2009

Part jam band/part radio ready alternative rockers, Dave Matthews and his eponymous band continue to be a difficult band to pin-point. On Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King (RCA), the troupe teams up with producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance) to churn out what's being hailed as its heaviest disc to date. Besides Matthews' unmistakable yelps, the band mixes funk, jazz and horn heavy rock sure to be a fairly satisfying summertime fix.

So many rock stars have died way before their time and Jeff Buckley is certainly one of the many. Though the son of Tim Buckley left us at a mere thirty, his debut disc Grace is amongst one of history's most revered. From 1994 to 1996, he toured the globe incessantly to support the project, which is reflected in the brand new concert collection Jeff BuckleyGrace- Around the World (Sony Legacy). The CD/DVD set compiles twenty-nine tracks from that era taken from various television programs, American club dates and random international appearances.

With countless DVDs under its belt, The Moody Blues have been documented in just about every imaginable venue across the globe. But as the vaults continue to be combed, additional footage is being unearthed, including Live at the Isle of Wight 1970 (Eagle Rock) from a tour in support of A Question of Balance. With half a million people watching, the revered British rockers tore through several familiar favorites, such as the notable highlight "Nights In White Satin."
