Andrea Bocelli Weekend Report: Bocelli's rare road trip, Etheridge embarks upon Hammond
Friday, June 12, 2009

In a rare road appearance, contemporary opera star Andrea Bocelli swings through the Windy City, along with dates in New York and Los Angeles. With over 60 million album sales to date, the esteemed entertainer's performed in front of two American presidents, a pair of Popes, Queen Elizabeth II, plus programs like "American Idol" and the Grammy Awards. Add in collaborations with the likes of Bono, Christina Aguilera, plus the late great Luciano Pavarotti, and Bocelli is amongst the most treasured vocal treasures of the last century. She may be best known for her angst-ridden brand of alternative rock, but P.J. Harvey is experimenting with the softer side of her palate these days. Following 2007's somber solo album White Chalk, the singer/songwriter turned in the collaborative affair A Woman A Man Walked By (Island) with longtime producer John Parish. The experimental offering is much more introspective and instrumentally tamer than Harvey's previous works Melissa Etheridge(coming nowhere near now classics like To Bring You My Love and Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea), but is provocative nonetheless. (Worth a shot - Friday at Riviera Theatre- Chicago, IL: www.ticketmaster.com).

When Melissa Etheridge debuted at the end of the '80s, she literally turned the rock n' roll world upside down with her assertive anthems reminiscent of Janis Joplin. Along the way, she's earned just as many headlines for her brave battle with breast cancer and equal rights advocacy as she has her hit singles. And as a scan of *Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled indicates, she's chalked up the memorable likes of "Come To My Window," "If I Wanted To," "I Want To Come Over" and "Bring Me Some Water" to name a mere smattering. Black Eyed Peas Street Week: B.B. on DVD, Black Eyed Peas are back
Monday, June 8, 2009

In the four years since the Black Eyed Peas released Monkey Business, will.i.am's become one of the country's most sought after producers, while Fergie's lit her solo career on fire. Along with Apl.De.Ap and Taboo, the foursome returns with its fifth studio album, though contrary to the title, it isn't a farewell project. The Interscope release The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies) is already known for the number one single "Boom Boom Pow," which follows on the heels of several other hot and heavy dance floor packers like "My Humps," "Let's Get It Started" and "Don't Phunk With My Heart."

Following its tenure with Geffen Records, Sonic Youth heads to Matador to turn in its sixteenth studio album. The indie veterans have the distortion-drenched volume turned up at full-stream throughout The Eternal, which has some ofB.B. King its mightiest production and most aggressive riffs to date. Pavement's Mark Ibold joins the fold on bass, while female co-front woman Kim Gordon sounds just as fierce as ever.

Now well into his '80s, B.B. King remains a touring titan, though fans can dip back to an important performance when he a mere 68-years-old. The recently released Live At Montreux 1993 (Eagle Vision) shows the guitar slinger in fiery form, blazing through nearly two hours worth of blues tunes with his trusty guitar Lucille in tow. The retrospective set list includes everything from "Let the Good Times Roll" to "Since I Met You Baby," "Ain't Nobody Home" and the immortal "The Thrill Is Gone."
