Elvis Costello Weekend Report: Second weekend of Summerfest in full swing
Friday, July 3, 2009

After performances as diverse as No Doubt, Bon Jovi and Stevie Wonder, Milwaukee's annual Summerfest soirée pulls out another round of heavy hitters for its second weekend. Though country fans are likely to swoon over Friday's headliner Kenny Chesney, the best act on the day's bill is unquestionably hip-hop's leading live band The Roots, alongside the return of metal chick Lita Ford, plus piano popper Gavin DeGraw.

As Independence Day kicks up the celebratory spirit of Saturday, The Fray and Jack's Mannequin stop by the Marcus Amphitheater backed by a strong supporting cast spanning all genres. Look forward to a side stage set by Celtic punkers Flogging Molly,Kid Rock followed by alternative rockers Anberlin and a re-configured line-up of classic rockers The Yardbirds. Jet also resurrects some garage rock, while Huey Lewis & the News promise a blues-enthused sing-a-long.

The final day of the festival tops off with Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd, two hell-raisers from different eras that are intertwining each other's beer guzzling audiences. Ska fans are sure to devour the double bill of The English Beat and Reel Big Fish, alongside neo-soul crooner Anthony Hamilton, jam band G. Love & Special Sauce, plus Elvis Costello and The Imposters. (Bet your life - Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Summerfest Grounds- Milwaukee, WI: www.summerfest.com).
Wilco Street Week: Welcome back Wilco, Helm on a roll
Monday, June 29, 2009

To combat piracy and build buzz, indie heroes Wilco offered a stream of its latest CD several weeks before street date. But after a grueling wait, Wilco (The Album) finally releases in physical and digital form on Nonesuch, which will surely entice its rapid followers to pick up a copy after wetting their appetites with that online spin. The project marks the band's seventh CD and marks its first studio project since 2007's Sky Blue Sky.

As a member of The Band, drummer/singer Levon Helm's accolades include membership in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a performance at Woodstock and multiple tours with Bob Dylan. The living legend re-activated his solo career after twenty-five years with 2007'sLevon Helm Dirt Farmer and he appears to be on a roll with the upcoming Electric Dirt (Vanguard). The project includes a slew of all-star guests like his daughter Amy Helm (of Ollabelle fame) and New Orleans' treasured piano man Allen Toussaint.

With the 40th anniversary of Woodstock right around the corner, it's only fitting to find Sony Legacy releasing a box set compiling the most prominent performances from that famed time period. The Woodstock Experience is a ten disc collection featuring full sets from Santana, Janis Joplin, Sly & the Family Stone, Jefferson Airplane and Johnny Winter. For those hoping to buy an individual artist without the hefty price tag of the $70 box, each concert will be broken down into double disc sets.
