Natalie Cole Weekend Report: Anthems from the Gaslight gang, Classic jazz from Cole
Friday, October 2, 2009

After a recent kidney transplant, the legendary Natalie Cole returns to the road and is said to be firing on all cylinders once again. The soul diva is entertaining her jazzy side on this tour, which revolves around last year's Grammy Award winning Still Unforgettable. The project once again pays tribute to her late great father Nat King Cole through a series of covers and virtual studio duets. But there's still plenty of solo hits on the docket, including "This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)," "I've Got Love on My Mind" and "I'm Catchin' Hell." (Bet your life - Friday at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino- Hammond, IN: www.thevenuechicago.com).

Fans of The Ramones, Social Distortion and perhaps even Bruce Springsteen will have their fists waving in the air as The Gaslight Anthem visit the Midwest. The punk rock n' rollers are back in the area after a jam-packed Lollapalooza performance, once again touring in support of the retro-influenced record The '59 Sound (SideOneDummy). The marathon bill The Gaslight Anthemalso includes Murder By Death, Loved Ones and Frank Turner. (Worth a shot - Sunday at Turner Hall- Milwaukee, WI: www.myspace.com/thegaslightanthem).

She may be the Madonna of Australia who regularly sells out stadiums for multiple night stands, but in America, Kylie Minogue is mostly known for "The Loco-Motion" and "Can't Get You Out of My Head." As a result, she's scaled back her tour in support of 2008's steamy X, playing more intimate clubs and theatres in America, who've thus far embraced her with brisk, but not exactly box office breaking ticket sales. Madge Street Week: Celebrate with Madonna, Genesis' concert collection
Monday, September 28, 2009

It's a "Holiday" in the land of Madonna lovers, which manifests itself on Celebration (Warner Bros.) hitting both CD and DVD. Contrary to popular belief, this marks Madge's first ever career spanning collection in either context, ranging from her early dance club days to the slick commercial pop of the new title track on this compilation. The audio installments are offered as single or double disc affairs (though just one disc omits many of her staples), while the visual edition is by far the most comprehensive, tracing 47 short clips, some of which were never before released on DVD.

Speaking of pop divas, Mariah Carey is coming out of her designer clothes closet to showcase some new hip-hop/R&B-inspired skin on Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (Island). When she released a record in 2008, the diva landed at Genesis#1 for the 18th time, surpassing Elvis Presley in the process. On this record, label executives are hoping she can rally two more chart toppers, which would actually tie The Beatles (as strange as that sounds).

The final of four Genesis remasters box sets finally hits streets, but rather than focusing on studio projects, this installment chronicles all of the band's concert collections. Dubbed Live 1973-2007 (Rhino) the eleven disc offering is loaded with both Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins shows, including the acclaimed Seconds Out and Three Sides Live shows, plus the stereo and 5.1 edition of Live At The Rainbow 1973, which is only available in this set. The cubed box also includes a booklet with extensive linear notes and rare photographs of all eras, plus a slot for fans to slide in 2007's When In Rome double disc concert set.
