Weekend Report: DJ dancing with Pamela Anderson, Riot Fest rocks
Friday, October 9, 2009 While the Windy City may be best known for hosting Lollapalooza and the Pitchfork Music Festival, Riot Fest is quickly swelling to significant proportions. Spanning five days in Chicago including the next three at the Congress Theatre (alongside several of the city's most prominent venues), the multi-band bill chronicles the top names in punk rock past and present. On opening night (Friday, October 9 to be exact), catch concerts from Murder City Devils, Dead Milkmen, Apocalypse Hoboken, Riverboat Gamblers and The Frankl Project (amongst others). Saturday kicks into high gear with NOFX, 88 Fingers Louie, Street Dogs, Youth Brigade, Shot Baker and Off With Their Heads (to name a few). And then Sunday rounds out with a bang via Screeching Weasel, Alkaline Trio, Pegboy, The Arrivals and She Likes Todd. (Worth a shot - Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Congress Theatre and other venues- Chicago, IL: www.riotfest.org). As a famous (and often infamous) star of the screen and rock star dating scene (Tommy Lee, Kid Rock), Pamela Anderson is one of the most recognizable celebrities on earth. She hits Hammond alongside DJ Rock City to present her new line of A*MUSE clothing by Richie Rich. Outside of strutting her stuff on the cat walk, expect pulsating tunes well into the night. (Worth a shot - Friday at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino- Hammond, IN: www.thevenuechicago.com).The Tennessee-based Paramore follow-up a mammoth summer tour opening for No Doubt with a headlining trek all its own. The pop/punkers just dropped Brand New Eyes (Fueled By Ramen), which is sure to propel its two million album sales streak. The project was primarily produced by Grammy winner Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Kid Rock, My Chemical Romance), alongside personal co-production from the band members. (Worth a shot - Saturday at House of Blues- Chicago, IL: www.ticketmaster.com). |

Street Week: Duran on DVD, Cash collaborates
Monday, October 5, 2009 Believe it or not, the original line-up of Duran Duran never had a proper live concert collection back in its heyday. Sure there was the Arena album and VHS, but that was a truncated set list interspersed with conceptual footage that hasn't aged all that well over time. But Live at Hammersmith 82 (Capitol) fills in some of that project's blanks as a front to back, uninterrupted concert on both CD and DVD, with the latter edition featuring a pair of previously unreleased "Top of the Pops" performances. Tunes on both editions include "Rio," "Girls on Film" and "Hungry Like the Wolf." The daughter of the late great Johnny Cash may have a famous last name, but she's steadily established herself as a solo artist. On Rosanne's latest CD The List (Manhattan), she collaborates with a who's who of classic and indie rockers including Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Rufus Wainwright and Wilco's Jeff Tweedy. Expect a sea of classic country covers passed on by her dear old dad.Tiesto is often billed as the world's most famous DJ, and given his sold out concert status from one corner of the globe to the next, that could very well be the case. On Kaleidoscope (Ultra), he blasts past the dance club stereotypes by inviting a slew of indie rockers and pop stars to add vocals, expanding his audience even wider. Guests include Jônsi Birgisson from Sigur Rós, Kele Okereke from Bloc Party, Nelly Furtado and Calvin Harris. |
