Weekend Report: Can Clarkson sell tickets?, MJ's posthumous movie
Friday, October 23, 2009 Cover bands aren't exactly the subject of critical fodder, but when an original artist is dead or a group ceases to exist, they're the next best option. Enter Cash'd Out, who salute the late great Johnny Cash, along with This Must be the Band, who are amongst the world's first Talking Heads hat tippers. The combination doesn't exactly seem like a hand in glove match, but anyone with discerning music tastes will be able to appreciate the diversity in each original act's innovative style. (Worth a shot - Saturday at House of Blues- Chicago, IL: www.houseofblues.com). Though the original plan was to be previewing his actual concert right about now, Michael Jackson's untimely passing left fans with merely a movie retrospective of his rehearsals. Dubbed "This Is It" named after a 50 night sold out residency at London's O2 Arena, the film finds the King of Pop perfecting his dance steps and stage spectacle, alongside a set list chock full of solo and Jackson 5 hits. For those who simply can't wait to catch the entertainer light up the silver screen, a special midnight showing hits theatre all across the country Tuesday night before its official Wednesday opening. (Bet your life - www.thisisit-movie.com).After attempting an arena tour a few years back but not being able to sell enough tickets, Kelly Clarkson scales down to theatres on this tour, but even so, the internet's been brewing with discount codes and special one day sales. Nonetheless, she's one of the few to find fame under "American Idol" that since shed the reality show's stigma by proving her powerhouse pipes and girl power anthems dig deeper than pre-fabrication. Street Week: Bauhaus box, Self-released Pearl Jam
Monday, October 19, 2009 Now that Peter Murphy is back on the solo circuit and Love and Rockets is reunited, chances are the final nail's been pounded into Bauhaus' coffin. Nonetheless, the iconic goth rockers are finding box set treatment of the now classic In the Flat Field (4ad). Besides the original album in remastered format, the double disc collection also includes b-sides, previously unreleased takes and alternative versions from the same sessions. An accompanying 48-page book includes rare photographs and memorabilia reproductions. Though it's already been available at Target, Pearl Jam's brand new Backspacer earns general internet release via Amazon.com and other retailers this week. The self-released affair finds the Seattle rockers going back to its grunge roots, while also propelling itself into the future of modern rock. Fervent fans will also be happy to know this disc marks the band's reunion with producer Brendan O'Brien (Korn, Bruce Springsteen), who turns in his first PJ credit since 1998's Yield. After a triumphant return to the touring trails last year, Leonard Cohen's found a renewed interest in his already esteemed catalogue. The sophisticated troubadour is still on the road, but Sony Legacy looks back with a CD/DVD set Live at the Isle of Wright, which comes in advance of the 1970 show's 40th anniversary. This particular set features songs such as "Suzanne," "Bird On a Wire" and "The Stranger Song" before an audience of 600,000. |
