Weezer Weekend Report: Swell's second tour, Weezer brings along younger bands
Friday, November 27, 2009

Since this weekend will be consumed by shopping and recovering from Turkey dinner, we'll start our concert suggestions off at the tip of next week. Leading the list is Weezer, who return to town in support of its latest surf-pop extravaganza Raditude (Geffen) and are sure to dust off a slew of witty hits from yesteryear. To stay on top of the teeny-bop crowd, the veterans also invite Jack's Mannequin and Motion City Soundtrack along for the ride. (Worth a shot - Tuesday at Aragon Ballroom- Chicago, IL: www.jamusa.com and Thursday at The Rave in Milwaukee: www.therave.tv).

After performing on the Once soundtrack, The Swell Season became an overnight, Academy Award winning sensation. Co-led by Glen Hansard (of The Frames fame) and Markéta Irglová, the group turns in tunes from the movie, along withThe Swell Season its new studio CD Strict Joy (Anti). Chicago's very own singer/songwriter Rachael Yamagata opens. (Worth a shot - Thursday at Auditorium Theatre- Chicago, IL: www.jamusa.com).

Vocal diva Linda Eder can tackle Broadway show tunes, Christmas cuts and just about any classical selection in any language with the utmost grace and sophistication. Often hailed as a young Barbra Streisand, catch the booming vocalist in one of the city's most intimate and acoustically satisfying clubs. (Bet your life - Thursday at Park West- Chicago, IL: vwww.jamusa.com).
Tom Waits Street Week: Waits and Petty in concert, Gaga goes deluxe
Monday, November 23, 2009

He may not tour very often, but whenever Tom Waits hits the road, it's an instant sell out and a subsequent scalper's field day. For those who couldn't get their hands on a ticket to his latest jaunt, Glitter and Doom Live (Anti) complies 2008 set list regulars from a variety of cities. Expect to hear "Get Behind the Mule" from Tulsa, "Falling Down" from Paris, "Trampled Rose" from Dublin" and "Lucky Day" from Atlanta (amongst many others).

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers certainly tour more often, but tickets are just as scarce for the famed American rock n' roll band. Though the group's released a variety of live CDs and DVDs over the years, none has been more comprehensive or compelling as The Live Anthology (Reprise), which spans four CDs and a variety of deluxe editions. In the Lady Gagastandard set, gear up for concert classics spanning 1978-2007 split between hits, rarities and unique covers (such as The Zombies' "I Want You Back Again," the Grateful Dead's "Friend of the Devil" and James Brown's "Good, Good Lovin").

She's hands down the most popular dance diva of this very moment and her record label attempts to reinforce that fact with the double disc deluxe set The Fame Monster (Interscope). In addition to all the infectious club cuts off of Lady Gaga's 2008 debut The Fame (including "Just Dance," "Poker Face" and "Paparazzi") catch eight new cuts (most notably "Telephone" with Beyonce) in the singer's sexy, party pop tradition.
