Trans Siberian Orchestra Weekend Report: Legend's soulful heat, TSO times two
Friday, December 25, 2009

The annual holiday tradition may land in town the day after Christmas, but everyone's bound to still be in the spirit. And for any Scrooge who's already lost the good cheer, chances are a Trans Siberian Orchestra concert ticket to either this matinee or evening performance will put a smile back on their faces. Outside of what's arguably the largest light show in touring history, the ensemble also brings its brand new double disc set Night Castle (Atlantic) to the stage, a rock opera of progressive proportions. (Worth a shot - Saturday at Allstate Arena- Rosemont, IL: www.ticketmaster.com).

After selling out a summer show at Ravinia Festival, John Legend transitions his tour in support of this year's Evolver (Sony) indoors. But no matter the environment, the singer/songwriter is sure to cross neo-soul musings with classic influences from the past (such as Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder). Add in some sensual pianoJohn Legend playing and he's sure to have the ladies swooning. (Bet your life - Wednesday at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino- Hammond, IN: www.thevenuechicago.com).

Akron, Ohio's famed sons The Black Keys go back to the large club basics for what's sure to be an incendiary set of sweaty proportions. Though there's nothing wrong with seeing the garage rock duo at enormous outdoor festivals, they kick up the most dust with the lights low and the amps cranked well past eleven. (Bet your life - Thursday and next Friday at the Riviera Theatre- Chicago, IL: www.jamusa.com).
The Who Street Week: The Who compiled, Mary J musings
Monday, December 21, 2009

'Tis the season for unneeded but still mildly alluring compilations. The Who is the latest to join the product fold just in time for the holidays with Greatest Hits (Geffen), a single disc affair streamlining over four decades of music making. Of course, this sort of thing's been done a zillion times before in the band's illustrious rock n' roll career, but at least it has all the obvious cuts like "I Can't Explain," "My Generation," "Pinball Wizard" and "Won't Get Fooled Again."

Looking more like the dignified Anita Baker on the cover than the "queen of hip-hop soul" (a title she's maintained across nine studio CDs), Mary J Blige is all grown up these days. As the title Stronger With Each Tear (Geffen) suggests, the soulful singer is fully embracing her "No More Drama" adage and Mary J. Bligecomfortably settling into a continuously healing skin. As for the disc's musical make-up, expect appearances from Ne-Yo, T.I., Rodney Jenkins, Drake and Tricky Stewart, along with the moving track "Color" taken from the powerful new movie Precious.

A new Mudvayne album is sure to get fans raising their fists in the air, but for the rest of us, who really cares? Well its fifth endeavor (a self-titled disc on Epic) actually consists of an incredibly interesting deluxe edition, if only for its packaging. Long story short, the Paul Booth-designed artwork will be printed entirely in ink that cannot be seen without a backlight, likely to be a music industry first and one that deserves creative props, even if the tunes inside are more of the same.
