Counting Crows Weekend Report: Counting Crows' collaborative concert, Folk legends return
Friday, August 20, 2010

Dubbed as Counting Crows' "Traveling Circus & Medicine Show," expect to catch the band in concert alongside a series of collaborators. Outside of some to be announced surprises, modern rockers Augustana are on the bill prior to the Grammy and Academy Award-nominated headliners, responsible for hits like "Mr. Jones" and "Accidentally In Love." (Worth a shot - Saturday and Tuesday at Ravinia- Highland Park, IL: www.ravinia.org).

When it comes to politically-charged folk heroes, none are more prolific and pertinent than Crosby, Stills & Nash. In fact, the trio seems to get better with time, hitting all the ultra-high harmoniesC,S&N like they did back in the day, accompanied by a rootsy repertoire, loaded with timeless lyrics that continue to transcend generations. (Bet your life - Sunday at Ravinia- Highland Park, IL: www.ravinia.org).

She may have had a rough year personally, but Rihanna's picking up the pieces in her musical career to continue on the dance/pop path. Though her latest record Rated R isn't quite as infectious as her pervious projects, larger than life set designs, countless costume changes and endless antics should at least make this comeback appearance somewhat entertaining. (Worth a shot - Wednesday at United Center- Chicago, IL: www.ticketmaster.com).
Brian Wilson Street Week: Mellencamp with T Bone, Brian Wilson is back
Monday, August 16, 2010

Even since former Beach Boy Brian Wilson put the finishing touches on the previously unreleased band project Smile, his credibility's been restored tenfold. Though it would be great to see the singer/songwriter penning his own tunes, at least he's masterful when covering another pair of legends on Reimagines Gershwin (Disney Pearl Series). With a full blessing from the estate, catch twelve tunes from George and Ira Gershwin, plus a pair of new Wilson/Gershwin cuts from the previously unreleased vaults.

After turning in a lush box set and book at the top of the summer, John Mellencamp seeks to squash the rumor that he's turned into a nostalgia act with the brand new studio CD No Better Than This (Rounder).John Mellencamp As was the tradition on the last time he recorded, the socially-minded troubadour teams up with producer T Bone Burnett for a roots rock meets Americana album.

Though neo-soul crooners are basically a dime a dozen these days, very few can make the ladies scream like Kem. The Universal Motown artist turns in his third excursion called Intimacy, led by the dramatic new single "Why Would You Stay," alongside collaborations with Jill Scott and David J. Van dePitt (who produced Marvin Gaye's groundbreaking What's Going On).
