Friday, August 27, 2010

Fans from all across the globe are sure to descend upon Michael Jackson's home state this weekend as his birthday is honored throughout the first annual MJFanvention. The event is split between panel sessions with those who knew or worked with the late great legend, autograph sessions with yet to be identified family members and a tribute concert featuring Tony Award winner Melba Moore, longtime touring guitarist Jennifer Battan and impersonator Edward Moss. (Fan club only - Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Radisson Hotel and Star Plaza Theatre- Merrillville, IN:

On another Motown-related note, two of The Supremes return to the road recreating the group's classic soul sound and colorful stage shows. Previous members Scherrie Payne and Lynda Laurence, alongside adjunct vocalist Joyce Vincent, have dubbed themselves The Flos since 1986, performing alongside the equally legendary likes of The Temptations,The Stooges The Four Tops and James Brown, plus Diana Ross herself on The Supremes' "Return To Love" tour in 2000. (Worth a shot - Sunday at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino- Hammond, IN:

The godfather of punk Iggy Pop was just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Stooges, who are celebrating the honor with some fall dates in major cities. Expect all the energy and explosiveness the group's always delivered, plus its front man's frenzied stage presence that's sure to include an invitation to some lucky audience members to join him in center spotlight. The show is also destined to wet the appetites for Iggy Pop and James Williamson's remixed and remastered Kill City, which bows October 19. (Bet your life - Sunday at Aragon Ballroom- Chicago, IL:
Katy Perry Street Week: Dandy Warhols compiled, Perry promises summertime fun
Monday, August 23, 2010

With over five million copies sold of her sugary sweet (though still substance filled) debut One of the Boys, Katy Perry follows-up with the equally fantastic Teenage Dream (Capitol). The pop diva who kisses girls and likes it (but is marrying a guy) knows just how to push people's buttons while laughing all the way to the bank as her fans sing-a-long to summertime standouts like "California Gurls" (backed by Snoop Dogg).

Depending on the era, The Dandy Warhols have evoked everything from the fuzzy extermination of The Velvet Underground to synth-saturated '80s beats a la Duran Duran to the grunge era glazed with glam. The entire gamut makes its way onto Best of the Capitol Years: 1995-07 that covers all the basic American singles The Dandy Warhols(even though the band was always bigger overseas), with a few unexpected additions. Completists are sure to flock, while casual listeners won't need any other disc, though they should brace themselves for a variety of mood and tempo shifts.

Flashback through Bruce Springsteen's archives with Collection 1973-1984 (Sony), which compiles The Boss' first seven studio albums in a box set stuff in mini record sleeves. The sleek and slimlined set includes classic collections like Born to Run and The River, alongside the mainstream breakthrough Born in the USA, all backed by the E Street Band.
