Nelly Furtado Weekend Report: Nelly turns up the heat, Classic rockers care
Friday, September 3, 2010

She debuted as a singer/songwriter, transformed into a dance diva and is currently showcasing her Spanish sultan side. Enter Nelly Furtado, one of pop music's most respected chameleons who's sure to get the crowd sweating to her throbbing beats, sultry ballads and rhythmic previews from her latest project Universal Latino project Mi Plan. (Bet your life - Friday at Ravinia- Highland Park, IL:

When a violent tornado ravaged Streator, IL earlier this summer, the small but enthusiastic rock n' roll town was left with some serious damage. But the area's very own Kevin Chalfant (of The Storm fame) is calling up his pals in the Voices of Rock Radio all-star group to raise funds for those ransacked. Hear his hits like "I've Got a Lot To Learn About Love" Voices of Rock Radioand "Show Me the Way," alongside a slew of smashes from Jimi Jamison, The Romantics' Wally Palmar, Ted Nugent's Band's Derek St. Holmes and the Beaver Brown Band's John Cafferty. (Bet your life - Saturday at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino- Hammond, IN:

Without new material, Billy Idol's pretty much waxing nostalgia, but even on auto-pilot, he's one of the more electrifying entertainers to emerge from the late 1970s punk circuit. Bank on hits like "Rebel Yell," "Eyes Without a Face" and "Flesh For Fantasy," though consider popping up early for a solo set from Slash. His guitar playing speaks for itself, but it's still up in the air if he can operate at full tilt outside of Guns N' Roses of Velvet Revolver. Goo Goo Dolls Street Week: Goo Goo Dolls return, Cohen chronicled on tour
Monday, August 30, 2010

While the Goo Goo Dolls didn't hit the charts until the mid-1990s, the band's actually been together since 1986. The group's longevity remains with the brand new studio release Something For The Rest Of Us (Warner Brothers), which finds front man John Rzeznik writing about society's current uncertainty. Musically, the band extends plenty of muscle from ramped up rockers to power ballads in its epic tradition.

Filmmaker Tony Palmer spent his formative years chronicling The Beatles, Cream and Jimi Hendrix, followed by time on tour with Leonard Cohen in 1972. The results of that latter journey can be traced throughout the Leonard Cohen DVD Bird On a Wire, which hasn'tLeonard Cohen been seen since its original release in 1974. This restored version comes after finding 290 rolls of film in 2009 and has since found a home in deluxe digipack packaging, complete with a poster reproduction of the original flick.

Even though Chocolate Genius Inc. figurehead Mark Anthony Thompson set out to record a trilogy of albums tracing first person stories with a cathartic resolve for the singer/songwriter, Swansongs turned out to be the fourth project in that 12 year song cycle. Marking the follow-up to 2005's Black Yankee Rock, the focus revolves primarily around loosing both of his parents, along with lamenting the passage of time in general. It's a lot to digest for those starting with this chapter, but anyone who followed Chocolate Genius Inc.'s journey thus far should have no trouble being moved and grooved by his humble reflections.
