The Commodores Weekend Report: Commodores build a "Brick House," The xx unleash electronica
Friday, September 25, 2010

Since the late 1960s through today, The Commodores have continued to command soulful stages all across the globe, coasting on a catalogue that's sold over 60 million units. The Grammy award winning Motown legends' stable includes "Machine Gun," "Brick House," "Sail On" and "Night Shift," which prove that despite lead singer switches (there's no more Lionel Richie), the nucleus of Walter " Clyde " Orange , William " WAK " King and James Dean "J.D." Nicholas is still sounding strong. (Bet your life - Saturday at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino- Hammond, IN:

He may be best known for collaborating with Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys, but Van Dyke Parks' resume also includes time logged behind the scenes with Grace Kelly, Ringo Starr and Joanna Newsom (amongst countless others). The xxAlong the way, the composer/arranger/multi-instrumentalist/singer recorded a plethora of solo albums which never earned the attention of his collaborators, but were inventive nonetheless. In a mere year, The xx went from London's underground to Mercury Prize nominees thanks to the strength of its self-titled debut disc on XL. Despite its indie stature, the synth-saturated alt-rockers managed to be amongst the most buzzed about bands at CMJ Music Marathon and went onto score coveted slots at all five of America 's most prominent festivals (Coachella, Sasquatch, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits) before gradating to this headlining outing. John Legend Street Week: Santana's guitar classics, Legend and The Roots come together
Monday, September 20, 2010

On their own, John Legend and The Roots are both neo-soul heavyweights that also strike the perfect balance between current hip-hop and retro soul. Together on the same album, the two acts are literally unstoppable making Wake Up! ( Columbia ) one of the most anticipated urban albums of the year. Get ready for a series of 1960s and '70s cover songs strung together by socially conscious threads, including a rendition of Donny Hathaway's "Little Getto Boy."

Out of all Eric Clapton's career periods, the most promising and prolific was unquestionably the 1960s. No wonder why that era earns a critical coverage on the obviously named DVD Eric Clapton- 1960's Review (Sexy Intellectual), which despite having no authorized affiliation with the six-string slinger, does a fairly Santanathorough job of tracing his time in The Yardbirds, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, Cream and Blind Faith. Along the way, fans are given glimpse of interview clips from good old Slowhand, though the majority of observations come from previous band members with varying degrees of fame.

Fellow guitar god Santana needs no introduction, but these days he's shifting the focus away from original material in favor of like-minded covers. Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time (Arista) lives up to its title by tackling Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" (with Chris Cornell), Van Halen's "Dance the Night Away" (with Train's Pat Monahan), The Rolling Stones' "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" (with Scott Weiland) and Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" (with Joe Cocker).
