Robert Cray Weekend Report: Ben Folds minus Five, Blues-stacked double bill
Friday, November 5, 2010

Most of the time when Robert Cray swings through town, he's appearing alongside Eric Clapton, but this time through, the legendary blues guitarist gets a full set devoted to his thirty-plus year career. Catch cuts from 2009's This Time (Vanguard), plus previous favorites like "Smoking Gun" from his crossover collection Strong Persuader (Island). And be sure to show up early for the Blind Boys of Alabama, one of the best bluesy/gospel groups in history who are currently touring in support of the Crescent City-inspired Down In New Orleans (Time Life). (Bet your life - Friday at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino- Hammond, IN:

After stepping down from Ben Folds Five, its fearless leader hasn't been nearly as infectious, though his popularity remains just as strong. Though he's sure to dust off a few band tunes, the main focus will be on 2010's Lonely Avenue (Nonesuch),Ben Folds which is an ambitious but unremarkable collaboration with English novelist Nick Hornby that fails to match his witty heyday. (Worth a shot - Friday at Riviera Theatre- Chicago, IL:

In the early '80s as both leader of the family band DeBarge and then a solo artist, El DeBarge was amongst the hottest R&B artists on earth competing with the likes of Michael Jackson and Prince. But as the years passed, he found himself in trouble with the law and facing crushing personal addictions that kept him on the sidelines from the studio and touring since 1994. Thankfully though, he's back with his life in order, plus the brand new single "Second Chance" (off an upcoming album of the same name) that proves he hasn't lost his groove. Worth a shot - Friday at The Shrine- Chicago, IL:
Weezer Street Week: Costello teams with T Bone again, Weezer rarities galore
Monday, November 1, 2010

Between the brand new studio CD Hurley and a cross country tour, Weezer's had plenty of exposure as of late. In fact, its old record label is capitalizing on the publicity with a pair of rarities releases sure to captivate fervent fans, but serve as mere product to the less interested. For starters, the Pinkerton: Deluxe Edition (Geffen) finds the original album fleshed out to a double disc version, complete with B-sides and live tracks from the same sessions. From there, Death To False Metal features nine previously unreleased originals and a cover of Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart."

After a series of records that traded his signature schmaltz for singer/songwriter cred, Neil Diamond turns in a covers disc of his all time favorite rock and pop songs. Though he picks a fairly obvious bunch throughout Elvis CostelloDreams (Columbia), his taste filter is once again more discreet as it channels the likes of Leonard Cohen, Randy Newman, Leon Russell and The Beatles.

For his second CD in a row, Elvis Costello teamed with super producer T Bone Burnett (who's recently resurrected the careers of Robert Plant and John Mellencamp). Throughout National Ransom (Hear Music), he's backed by the Imposters and the Sugarcanes, who spent a whirlwind 11 day session split between Nashville and Los Angeles. Special guests include Vince Gill, Buddy Miller and Leon Russell (hot on the heels of his collaborative album with Elton John).
