Trans-Siberian Orchestra Weekend Report: TSO's annual holiday knockout, Mellencamp strips down
Friday, November 26, 2010

The day after Thanksgiving is the perfect time to start celebrating the holidays and it's no surprise that Trans-Siberian Orchestra is leading the festivities. Touring for the second year in support of its double disc studio epic Night Castle (Lava), the massive troupe is sure to pack some rock n' roll steroids into traditional and original Yuletide tunes, backed by monstrous production. (Bet your life - Friday at Allstate Arena- Rosemont, IL: www.ticketmaster.com).

From his time leading the charts throughout the 1980s with classic rockers like "Small Town" and "Pink Houses" to more socially conscious songwriting throughout the 90s, John Mellencamp's become a timeless troubadour. These days, he's turning away from radio conventions for a more stripped down roots rock approachJohn Mellencamp (complete with political commentary) across No Better Than This (Rounder), which was produced by T Bone Burnett. (Worth a shot - Friday and Saturday at Chicago Theatre- Chicago, IL: www.ticketmaster.com).

She first rose to fame as a member of The Staple Singers (also becoming pivotal in the Civil Rights movement), though Mavis Staples continues to remain relevant in solo circles. Her latest long player You Are Not Alone (Anti) continues in that gospel-infused soul tradition, complete with production from Chicago's very own Wilco front man Jeff Tweedy (who's not billed on this particular show but could quite possibly pop up). Kanye West Street Week: MJ's videos compiled, Kanye tries a comeback
Monday, November 22, 2010

After all of his public relations disasters, including the ill-fated Taylor Swift interruption during last year's MTV Video Awards, Kanye West's star has certainly faded. However even the grandest of missteps don't diminish the rapper's talents across My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (Def Jam), which despite showcasing a heavy heart, find the hip-hop heroes serving up plenty of sweltering grooves with a little help from Jay-Z, Nikki Minaj, Rick Ross and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon.

The posthumous releases for Michael Jackson keep flowing at a rapid fire rate, though in the case of the beautiful DVD box set Michael Jackson's Vision (Sony Legacy), it's well worth the price of admission. For somewhere around $30 (or under), Michel JacksonKing of Pop faithful can catch all of his major music videos compiled across three discs, including game changing masterpieces like "Thriller," "Beat It," "Billie Jean" and "Bad."

To culminate the Bee Gees' 50th anniversary, the group is turning in the documentary DVD In Our Own Time (Eagle Vision). Catch the full story behind the pop giants split between fresh takes from Barry and Robin Gibb, plus previous clips of their departed brother Maurice. Also catch clips of concerts, TV appearances and videos tracing their Brit pop rise through disco dominance and adult contemporary conclusion.
