Usher Weekend Report: Usher's R&B explosion, Hook resurrects Joy Division
Friday, December 3, 2010

Ever since he got divorced, Usher appears to have a new lease on life, crafting some of this year's catchiest R&B anthems and bedroom ballads. Between tag teams with Pitbull and will.i.am, alongside his individual pulsations, he's just as hot as he was ten years ago, while like-minded opening acts Trey Songz and Miguel are likely to follow in his rhythmic footsteps. (Worth a shot - Friday at Allstate Arena- Rosemont, IL: www.ticketmaster.com).

The annual holiday tradition of jazz man Dave Koz bringing along his famous friends for an evening packed with instrumental seasonal sounds is back with yet another solid line-up. This year, the sax man is joined by South African singer/guitarist Jonathan Butler, keyboardist Brian Culbertson and fellowPeter Hook sax player Candy Dulfer, who are sure to turn in a series of toe-tapping carols, originals and non-holiday hits. (Worth a shot - Saturday at Chicago Theatre- Chicago, IL: www.thechicagotheatre.com).

Thirty years after redefining alternative rock in Joy Division, bass player Peter Hook is resurrecting the band's classic Unknown Pleasures album on tour. Though the group's shelf life was cut criminally short as a result of front man Ian Curtis' suicide, its legacy lives on through influence on countless younger acts. Relive all of the album's crests including, "She's Lost Control" and "Shadowplay," backed by a full band that features Peter's son Jack Hook on bass as his pops steps up to the microphone. (Bet your life - Monday at Double Door- Chicago, IL: www.doubledoor.com).
Beyonce Street Week: The Black Eyed Peas are back, Beyonce live
Monday, November 29, 2010

She's often been deemed this generation's Tina Turner thanks to her R&B roots, crossover appeal and overall superstar status. Just look at Beyonce's stats over the past year, which include 108 shows in 78 cities spanning 32 countries and 6 continents. Catch what over a million fans saw firsthand on the DVD/CD I Am... World Tour (Columbia), which includes divalicious renditions of "Single Ladies," "Crazy In Love" and "Halo."

Even if the Black Eyed Peas have traded street cred for a constant stream of commercial sound bites, there's something undeniably infectious surrounding its rap, rock and hip-hop hybrid. The same continues to be the case throughout The Beginning (Interscope),Black Eyed Peas which is the sequel of sorts to last year's 11 million album seller The E.N.D. The fresh batch drops in a standard CD format, deluxe disc with a trio of bonus tracks and a vinyl edition.

In his prime, El DeBarge and his family band bearing the same last name were competing neck in neck with The Jacksons, Prince and the early days of New Edition. But for the last 16 years, he's encountered a spiraling downfall that started with substance abuse, evolved to incarceration and ended with a religious rebirth. The results of the journey are chronicled throughout his aptly titled new disc Second Chance (Geffen), which could be perceived as trite if he wasn't so convincingly sincere across an album that also includes guest stars Fabolous, 50 Cent and Faith Evans.
