Voices of Rock Radio Weekend Report: Classic rockers give back, Cake readies new record
Friday, December 10, 2010

When a violent tornado ravaged Streator, IL earlier this summer, the small but enthusiastic rock n' roll town was left with some serious damage. But the area's very own Kevin Chalfant (of The Storm fame) is calling up his pals in the Voices of Rock Radio all-star group to raise funds for those ransacked. Hear his hits like "I've Got a Lot To Learn About Love" and "Show Me the Way," alongside a slew of smashes from The Romantics' Wally Palmar, Ted Nugent Band's Derek St. Holmes, .38 Special's Don Barnes and the Beaver Brown Band's John Cafferty. (Bet your life Friday at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino- Hammond, IN: www.thevenuechicago.com).

The original concept of Straight No Chaser dates back to 1996 when a group of guys wanted to introduce a fresh take on a cappella with a track from jazz man Thelonious Monk as inspiration for its namesake. But when a reunion on campus inspired a member to post a performance clip on YouTube, the ten piece vocal troupe took the web by storm and quickly inked a deal with Atlantic Records. Look forward to a mixtureCake of Yuletide tunes, plus selections from its first official non-holiday collection With a Twist via that major label, recalling everyone from Coldplay and Oasis to Motown and doo-wop. (Bet Your Life Saturday at Chicago Theatre- Chicago, IL: www.thechicagotheatre.com).

Idiosyncratic alterative rockers Cake haven't released a record in seven years, so the fact that Showroom of Compassion (Upbeat) finally hits streets on January 11 means fans are surely salivating. Get a sneak preview of the project, plus quirky hits like "The Distance," "Never There" and "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" in front man John McCrea's signature speak/singing style. (Worth a shot Tuesday at House of Blues- Chicago, IL: www.ticketmaster.com).
Daft Punk Street Week: Daft Punk's unusual covers collection, New Bowie DVD
Monday, December 6, 2010

Electronic rockers Daft Punk are always wearing 1980s influences on its sleeves, but never as overtly as the new soundtrack album Tron: Legacy (Walt Disney Records). The French duo recently composed a slew of new instrumentals for the forthcoming film of the same name, which takes cues from the original 1982 movie. In addition to contributions from main men Guy-Manuel de Homen-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, the album includes a symphony recorded at Britain's AIR Lyndhurst Studios.

In other electronic news, Nine Inch Nails is gearing up for the Pretty Hate Machine: 2010 Remaster (Null Corporation) deluxe edition. Though the project was revamped in 2005, it was without the band's consent, making this Trent Reznor-approved Bowieedition a primary purchase for fans. In doing so, listeners can trace the album's industrial innovations and relive classic tracks like "Head Like A Hole," "Terrible Lie" and "Something I Can Never Have."

It's been ages since David Bowie released a studio CD (seven years to be exact) but the influx of projects continues given the legend's rich archive. On the self-explanatory DVD Rare and Unseen (MVD Visual), the genius of studio and stage unveils a treasure trove of obscure footage, much of which hasn't been seen in several decades. Catch an interview with Russell Harty, plus various press conferences, rehearsal footage and backstage randomness sure to make die-hards salivate.
