John Legend Weekend Report: A Legend in the making, Garth in Music City
Friday, December 17, 2010

When John Legend stopped by this ideal showroom last winter, he brought along a piping hot show of neo-soul and sex appeal, backed by one of the slickest bands in the business. The multiple Grammy winner just dropped the disc Wake Up! (G.O.O.D. Music/Columbia), a collaborative record with The Roots that digs up long lost retro soul covers. Of course, plenty of original smashes are sure to appear, including showstoppers like "Green Light," "Ordinary People" and "Save Room." (Bet your life - Friday at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino- Hammond, IN: www.thevenuechicago.com).

Outside of seeing him singing and playing guitar on a bar stool in Las Vegas, Garth Brooks is still pretty much retired. But he comes out of the woodwork for an exclusive run of arena shows this year (and the foreseeable future) to churn out the most celebrated catalogue in the history Garth Brooksof contemporary country music. Even better is the ticket price, which clocks in under $30 and features all the proceeds going directly to Nashville flood victims. (Bet your life - Friday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at Bridgestone Arena- Nashville, TN: www.bridgestonearena.com).

Speaking of country, one of the most classic bands of all time the Oak Ridge Boys appear at the Star Plaza for its annual Christmas tour. Aside from southern-stroked sounds of the season, gear up for harmony-heavy hits like "Elvira," "American Made," "Bobbie Sue," plus possibly it's more recent unconventional cover version of The White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army." (Worth a shot - Sunday at Star Plaza Theatre- Merrillville, IN: www.starplazatheatre.com).
Michael Jackson Street Week: Old Blue Eyes is back, MJ's final studio project
Monday, December 13, 2010

Calling Michael Jackson's first posthumous album of new material a proper studio disc is a bit misleading, since after all, he died before putting the finishing touches on the un-creatively titled Michael (Epic). As a matter of fact, guest stars like Akon and Lenny Kravitz seem to score more face time than the King of Pop during their collaborations, while rumors have surfaced that a sound-a-like may have been employed on certain selections. Accusations aside, at least there was enough of groundwork laid before his untimely passing to give die-hards ten unheard tunes just in time for Christmas.

She may not have come in first place on "American Idol," but Crystal Bowersox could very well be better off since victors of the fading reality show seldom have a long shelf life. On her major label debut Farmer's Daughter (Jive), Frank Sinatrathe earthy singer teams with producer David Bendeth (Paramore, Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach) for eight original tunes, two co-writes, a cover of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" and the Kara DioGuardi/Chad Kroeger-penned "Hold On."

For those that remember Frank Sinatra's 1982 Concert for the Americas (Shout Factory) extravaganza, it was a regal undertaking that found the Chairman of the Board collaborating with the legendary Buddy Rich on drums. This DVD edition (available for the first time ever in America) gives fans a look into the 90-minute show from the Dominican Republic, which finds the then 66-year-old at the time crooning his way through standards like "My Kind of Town," "Come Rain or Come Shine," "The Lady Is a Tramp" and "Theme From New York, New York."
