Mustard Plug Weekend Report: Ska from Mustard Plug, A soulful double bill
Friday, December 24, 2010

The spirit of ska turns up at the Metro for the annual appearance by the genre's favorites Mustard Plug. Though not as visible in the mainstream anymore, the group continues releasing records on Hopeless and continues scoring downloads of its skanktified cover of The Verve Pipe's "The Freshman." Swing by early for a set by like-minded local regulars Deals Gone Band. (Worth a shot - Monday at Metro- Chicago: www.metrochicago.com).

Ever since her time on "American Idol," Fantasia's earned the reputation of being this generation's Patti LaBelle. Of course, she interjects a lot more hip-hop crossed with modern soul into the equation, but when it comes to screaming and hollering, she gives good Fantasiaold Miss Patti a run for her money. Along for the ride is smooth neo-soul crooner Eric Benet, who's always a hit with the ladies and is sure to perform a plethora of bedroom ballads. (Worth a shot - Thursday at Auditorium Theatre- Chicago, IL: www.ticketmaster.com).

Jam bands are a dime a dozen these days, but Umphrey's McGee is consistently selling out theatres across the country. Its three night homecoming stand is a precursor to the group's annual New Year's Eve celebration, which is sure to be loaded with the group's improvisational progressive rock/jazz fusion and plenty of patchouli in the air. (Fan club only - Wednesday, Thursday and next Friday at Riviera Theatre- Chicago: www.jamusa.com).
Jamie Foxx Street Week: Cooper's latest remastered, From the screen to the studio
Monday, December 20, 2010

Even though he's a famous movie star, Jamie Foxx is also an accomplished artist who seemed to up the guest list ante even more than previous projects throughout Best Night of My Life (J Records). The R&B and hip-hop tinged entertainer teams up with Justin Timberlake, T.I., Rick Ross, Ludacris, Drake and many more, ensuring he'll be red hot on the airwaves in between his next trip to the silver screen.

Shock rocker Alice Cooper may not be turning in a new project at the moment, but he's returning to his most recent studio CD for a remastered facelift. Catch the legend's 25th studio album Along Came a Spider (Bigger Picture), Alice Cooperbeefed up with three new tunes exclusive to this edition ("Shadow of Yourself," "I'll Still Be There" and an unplugged version of "Salvation"), plus special guests Slash and Ozzy Osbourne.

Thus far, all three of Keyshia Cole's albums have reached platinum sales status, meaning expectations are extra high for her latest long player Calling All Hearts (Geffen). The singer steps up to the plate with her sensual R&B pipes in tact, alongside guests like Timbaland, Faith Evans and Nicki Minaj, who are sure to expand her audience into rap, old school soul and teen pop territories.
