Girl Talk Weekend Report: Don't miss The Black Keys and Girl Talk on NYE and more!
Friday, December 31, 2010

Celebrate NYE at The Rave with Girl Talk's infectious, accessible brand of sample-addled dance music. Constructing loops of complex sample-based nature, Girl Talk's takes us to places of mash-up frenzy and in the process shows us new ways to interpret music, both old and new. Gregg Gillis' (aka Girl Talk) latest work "All Day" was released with an astonishing 373 samples packed into a 71 minute long player, and this will be his first performance in Milwaukee since that release. It should prove to be a high energy journey through many genres and styles of music, all while reveling and Robert Randolph ushering in the new year at The Rave. (Bet your life - Friday at The Rave - Milwaukee, WI; www.therave.com/concert_tickets.asp).

The pedal steel prodigy known as Robert Randolph has one of the fiercest Family Band's in the business and their new record together, We Walk This Road (Warner Bros.), is amongst the collective's most incendiary to date. Catch a myriad of rock n' roll, funk, blues and gospel during a set that's sure to extend well past midnight thanks to several spiritually-inspired jam sessions. (Bet your life - Friday at House of Blues- Chicago, IL: www.ticketmaster.com).

Either The Black Keys love celebrating the holiday in the closest world class city to its hometown of Akron, Ohio or Chicago fans love the band the most because 2011 marks its second countdown celebration in a row. See how much vocalist/guitaristThe Black Keys Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney have grown since debuting nearly a decade ago, especially on the blistering new blues rocker Brothers (Nonesuch). (Bet your life - Friday and Saturday at Aragon Ballroom- Chicago, IL: www.jamusa.com).

For those who aren't hung over, the perfect party on New Year's Day just so happens to be with one of rock n' roll's greatest luminaries. The 84-year-old Chuck Berry appears in all his colorful glory, sure to fire through the genre's fast and furious rhythmic roots, including enduring originals like "Maybellene" "Roll Over Beethoven," "Rock and Roll Music" and "Johnny B. Goode" (Bet your life - Saturday at Congress Theatre- Chicago, IL: Chicago, IL: www.congresschicago.com).
George Michael Street Week: A belated George Michael Christmas, Duran Duran on iTunes
Monday, December 27, 2010

Between Wham!'s "Last Christmas" and George Michael's vocal contributions to Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" the fallen British pop star earns lots of airplay around this time of year. But there are also new sounds this season thanks to a UK import of the EP December Song (I Dreamed of Christmas), which features the jazzy title track, the instrumental "Jingle (A Musical Interlewd)" and "Praying For Time" (live at Abbey Road) all packaged as a Christmas card.

The vinyl rage continues with Kanye West's new My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (Def Jam), which earns a deluxe triple LP packaging. This limited edition affair includes all the savvy hip-hop from the CD edition Kanye West(complete with guest stars Nikki Minaj, Jay-Z, Rick Ross and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon), though it's also beefed up with full album notes and frameable artwork.

When Duran Duran turned to Timbaland and Justin Timberlake to give the band a botox job come 2007's Red Carpet Massacre (Epic), it didn't go as well as planned. Even if the project had glimpses of the band's original greatness, some songs seemed out of character and led to sluggish sales, which surely inspired Simon Le Bon and the boys to come out swinging with this return to form follow-up All You Need Is Now (Tapemodern). Though there's a decidedly new wave slant, the band avoids sounding dated thanks to shiny production from Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse, Adele, Kaiser Chiefs).
