This Week's Picks: Death Cab with an orchestra, Creed's classic albums, plus plenty of fun
Monday, April 9, 2012

CreedCreed's classic albums: Though it's hard to believe how fast the times flown, this year marks the 15th anniversary behind Creed's debut disc My Own Prison, which sold over six million copies and brought the foursome from Florida obscurity to superstardom. From there, the band broke the sophomore slump with 1999's Human Clay, which received a diamond certification for selling over 11 million copies and spawned sold out stadiums across the globe. Both albums will be on display, alongside hits and other album cuts. Friday (My Own Prison) and Saturday (Human Clay) at Chicago Theatre: www.thechicagotheatre.com.

FunPlenty of fun: Somehow fun manages to impact both the artistic and commercial side of current pop culture, from popping up on the bill at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival to having one its songs sung on the smash TV show "Glee." One the artistic side of the argument, the trio from New York concocts a distinct myriad of baroque indie rock, theatrical pop and hip-hop, though for those inclined exclusively towards Top 40 radio, there isn't a single song on the band;s sophomore CD Some Nights that isn't endlessly contagious. Saturday at Vic Theatre: www.jamusa.com.

Death Cab For CutieDeath Cab with an orchestra: Back when Death Cab For Cutie was only known on the underground, its annual Chicago stomping grounds was the venerable Metro. Though the Washington indie rockers have since graduated to headlining arenas and festivals, a two night stand at the Chicago Theatre should give faithful followers a relatively intimate fix. The current CD Codes and Keys may be the center of these shows, but the bonus point of attraction is accompaniment by members of San Francisco's Magik*Magik Orchestra. Monday and Tuesday at Chicago Theatre: www.thechicagotheatre.com.
