This Week's Picks: Nick Lowe plugs in, sold out Snow Patrol, plus TSO's non-holiday rock opera
Monday, April 16, 2012

Nick LoweNick Lowe plugs in: It's not that often to find Nick Lowe on the road, but Chicago audiences are in luck this year, starting with his superb opening set before Wilco's Auditorium Theatre show in December, followed by this full-band solo show. The sophisticated "Cruel To Be Kind" songwriter is touring in support of the new CD The Old Magic (Yep Roc), but his entire pub rock persona is guaranteed to be on display. Friday, April 20 at Park West:

Snow patrolSold out Snow Patrol: Following a slot on U2's gargantuan 360 Tour, Snow Patrol scales back in comparison with this headlining outing. The Brit pop/indie rock outfit just dropped Fallen Empires (Island), which marks the band's longest and most ambitious album to date, sure to make for a compelling evening of swirling soundscapes. Saturday, April 21 at Aragon Ballroom:

Trans Siberin OrchestraTSO's non-holiday rock opera: Don't question the calendar just because Trans-Siberian Orchestra is on the road. The progressive/symphonic rock troupe makes a rare road trip outside of Christmastime to unfurl its acclaimed rock opera Beethoven's Last Night (Atlantic) in all its epic glory and string-soaked grandeur. Sunday, April 22 at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino:
