This Week's Picks:
Unstoppable alt-rock double bill, Meat Loaf mayhem, Anita's Ravinia debut
Monday, August 20, 2012
Unstoppable alt-rock double bill:: The Honda Civic Tour is known for pairing the top names in alternative rock, though this summer is hands down its strongest line-up to date. Now a dozen years into its career, Linkin Park leads the line-up with its fast action assault of heavy handed rhythms and pleading vocals, while Incubus is just as formidable of a live force with its electronically-spiked experimental offerings. Friday, August 24 at First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre: www.livenation.com.
Meat Loaf mayhem:: Cats may have nine lives, but Meat Loaf can boast about having many more, constantly bouncing back from near death experiences and channeling the emotion into his epic musical delivery. The master of the concept album ("Bat Out Of Hell") and one time Eddie (of "Rocky Horror" fame) belts out all the melodrama from his storied 45 year career, including cuts off 2012's "Hell In A Handbasket." Friday, August 24 at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino: www.thevenuechicago.com.
Anita's Ravinia debut:: Though she's kept a somewhat low profile as of late, Anita Baker never has any trouble selling tickets thanks to a rich past strewn with contemporary soul and jazz. To recap, the vocal diva extraordinaire is likely to name check "Sweet Love," "Giving You the Best That I've Got" and "Caught Up In the Rapture," plus preview tunes from this fall's "Only Forever," which marks her first new collection in eight years. Saturday, August 25 at Ravinia: www.ravinia.org.
