Ellie's quirky indie
pop, Soundgarden's reunion record, plus Colvin comes home
Monday, January 28, 2013
Ellie's quirky indie pop: The breakneck speed at which Ellie Goulding's single "Lights" sold over three million copies in America alone was completely unexpected, instantly sending the folk-flavored indie/electro pop princess into an unsettling season of constant movement. The results find her new album "Halcyon" takinga darker, soul-searching lyrical dichotomy compared to last year's precursor, though the bountiful dance beats and synth-tipped arrangements remain on a record that's equally destined for the dance floor as it is a pair of earbuds. Soundgarden's reunion record: Even though Soundgarden's already made the reunion rounds throughout both the solo and festival circuit, this year's tour marks the first in support of new material since the grunge-era heyday. The recently released "King Animal" marks these Seattle sons' first fresh batch of material in 16 years, blending the best of its original era with metallic and psychedelic leanings. Tuesday, January 29 and Wednesday, January 30 at Riviera Theatre: www.jamusa.com.
Colvin comes home: The singer/songwriter behind the "Sunny Came Home" is staging a homecoming weekend of her own promising that smash single and several off 2012's "All Fall Down" (which features Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss and Jakob Dylan). Though the Carbondale-bred Shawn Colvin is known to the public at large as a radio-friendly roots rocker, she's equally in demand throughout folk circles, notching up additional credits assisting Mary Chapin Carpenter and James Taylor. Friday, February 1 and Saturday, February 2 at Space: www.evanstonspace.com.
