Patti punks it up, Camper teams with Cracker, plus Paisley's powerhouse playing

Patti Smith Patti Smith Patti Smith Patti Smith

Patti punks it up: Punk rocker Patti Smith rarely tours, so an opportunity to see the veteran in an intimate setting once (if not twice) shouldn't even be questioned. The insurgent singer/songwriter always covers her whole career, though this outing's emphasis is on 2012's "Banga," which marks her first original project since 2004 (and the 11th overall since debuting in 1975). Even at 66, Smith is still crafting gutsy material, filled with a plethora of poetic lyrics addressing several angles of humanity with ease and expertise. Monday, May 6 and Tuesday, May 7 at Vic Theatre: www.jamusa.com.

Camper Van Beethoven Camper Van Beethoven Camper Van Beethoven

Camper teams with Cracker: The kinship between Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker continues on a double-decker tour that finds shared front man David Lowery once again doing double duty. While it's always great to hear Cracker's roots rockin' romps from the past twenty years, Camper fans are sure to rejoice over the group's first batch of fresh material since 2004. "La Costa Perdida" (429 Records) is a self-produced affair filled with California-inspired indie rock/alt-country that once again finds the fellas' wit and musicianship in ultra fine form. Friday, May 10 at Cubby Bear Chicago: www.cubbybear.com.

Brads Paisley Brads Paisley Brads Paisley Brads Paisley

Paisley's powerhouse playing: He may have made headlines all the world over for the love it or hate it "Accidental Racist" duet with LL Cool J, but there's much more to devour on Brad Paisley's new 17 track album "Wheelhouse." Aside from more socially conscious messages, the singer/songwriter/guitar slinger's chops are second to none within the country genre, while he's simultaneously rock n' roll enough to attract an amphitheatre-sized audience. Friday, May 11 at First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre: www.livenation.com.
