Bonnie's bluesy blend, Anderson's second solo sweep, plus Groban gets around
Monday, October 14, 2013

Bonnie's bluesy blend: Last year Bonnie Raitt returned after a seven year absence for the self-produced affair "Slipstream" on her very own Redwing Records label. Throughout the dozen cuts, the tunesmith sounds especially assertive, blending the best of blues, soul and slide guitar, all weaved around her unmistakable vocals. Support act Mavis Staples certainly shares those traditions, especially on the new project "One True Vine" (Anti-), which marks her second in a row produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy. Anderson's second solo sweep: On the heels of an outdoor appearance at Ravinia this summer, Jethro Tull singer Ian Anderson moves his double concept album tour indoors to a theatre setting. Once again, the set list will be split between the group's seminal "Thick As A Brick" tale, paired with his own "Thick As A Brick 2" sequel, backed by a full band sure to be overflowing with experimental sounds. Groban gets around: Even if he most commonly gets categorized on the softer side of the musical spectrum, it's apparent Josh Groban is one of the most diverse entertainers of the current generation. His latest album "All That Echoes" (Reprise) is produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Fleetwood Mac, Goo Goo Dolls) and features everything from Stevie Wonder's "I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)," to "Once" soundtrack staple "Falling Slowly," to songs in Spanish and Italian, which are sure to leap to life within this tour's "in the round" setting.
