Hawthorne's soul revival, Maniacs for Valentines, plus 20/20 with Timberlake
Monday, February 10, 2014
Hawthorne's soul revival: There's probably no better way to spend Valentine's Day then with some ultra smooth soul, and while Mayer Hawthorne might not be one of the Motown greats, the 35-year-old revivalist sure does wear those influences on his sleeve. Catch recent tunes from 2013's "Where Does This Door Go," along with plenty of past treasures and possibly an old school cover tune or two. Friday, February 14 at Park West: www.jamusa.com.
Maniacs for Valentines: For those who hope to celebrate the lover's holiday with more of an adult alternative motif, there's always a return engagement from 10,000 Maniacs to one of Chicago's most cozy venues. Cuddle up with some wine while the '80s and '90s hitmakers cruise through "These Are The Days," "Hey Jack Kerouac" and Patti Smith's "Because The Night," plus tunes from last year's "Music From The Motion Picture" (the group's first in 14 years). Friday, February 14 at City Winery: www.citywinery.com/chicago/.
20/20 with Timberlake: After selling out Solider Field with frequent collaborator Jay Z over the summer, Justin Timberlake makes the arena rounds on his own. Besides a stable of previous hits (from "Rock Your Body" to "SexyBack"), the soulful singer/songwriter also has two volumes of "The 20/20 Experience" to tout, including current smashes like "Mirrors" and "Take Back The Night." Sunday, February 16 and Monday, February 17 at United Center: www.livenation.com.
