Wilco Weekend Report: Aaron for the holidays, Rocking for kids
Friday, December 5, 2008

The annual Rock For Kids charity auction is always known for collecting impressive memorabilia and this year is incredibly impressive. B.B. King turns in a signed replica of his Lucille guitar, Rod Stewart offers up an autographed soccer ball and someone can even score a chance to be a character in an upcoming release from Midway Games. Local heroes who turned in items include Wilco, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and none other than President Elect Barack Obama. (Bet your life - Friday at Park West- Chicago: www.rockforkids.org).

He may have first found fame as part of the Neville Brothers, but Aaron Neville remains an New Orleans institution even on his own. The perennial performer hits the Windy City for a solo show geared especially for the holidays, though the high pitched powerhouse certainly weaves his own vocal web around even the most common carol. Aaron NevilleExpect songs from his critically acclaimed Yuletide classics Christmas Prayer and Soulful Christmas, plus a special appearance by his brother Charles Neville. (Bet your life - Saturday at The Center For Performing Arts at Governors State University- University Park, IL: www.centertickets.net).

She'll always be regarded as one of Motown's living legends, though Gladys Knight has turned to jazz and standards as of late. No matter what type of material she sings, the veteran's voice remains velvety and graceful, but fans clearly flock to her shows to here the hits as opposed to current cuts. And she's certainly had plenty of them, including the sing-a-longs "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)" and the immortal "Midnight Train to Georgia." (Worth a shot - Sunday at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino- Hammond, IN: www.thevenuechicago.com).
Neil Young Street Week: Kylie's sexy new X, Neil from the archives
Monday, December 1, 2008

Election Day may be over, but it's always a political season for Neil Young, who returns to the road this winter performing tracks from his individual career and tenure with Crosby, Stills & Nash. To coincide with the outing, the troubadour digs deep in the vaults to unearth Sugar Mountain-Live At Canterbury House 1968 (Reprise), a CD/DVD combo set chronicling that classic concert. The set list focuses heavily on his self-titled solo debut, which was ironically released shortly after this very show.

Rapper/hip-hop hero Akon also knows how it feels to collaborate, teaming up with everyone from Lil Wayne to T-Pain, Young Jeezy, Kardinal Offishall, Ray Lavender and Wyclef Jean on his latest offering Freedom (Universal). "The key is to take it from the dark side and into the light," Akon says of the album. Kylie Minogue"I'm not gonna be miserable, preachy and unhappy forever. Of course, when you first come out from doing time, you're excited about being free and want to teach everybody what you've learned... I know people have preconceived notions about me. I'm not who they think I am."

She'll never be awarded for having the strongest voice in the world, but Kylie Minogue sure is sexy even at 40 (and looking better than most half her age!) The Australian singer releases X 2008 Tour Edition (EMI/Capitol) in correlation with an international tour, featuring an expanded version of the 2007 album bearing the same name, plus a bonus DVD. The visual installment features steamy videos for "2 Hearts," "Wow" and "In My Arms," plus behind the scenes mini-documentaries for each for songs.
