Oasis Weekend Report: Winston wonderland, Angst from Oasis
Friday, December 12, 2008

It's been three years since Oasis last stormed the Windy City, and between now and then, the group's released the solid new studio CD Dig Out Your Soul (Reprise). The Abbey Road recording sticks to what these British boys do best and that's plug in with alt-rock angst and occasionally strip things down for a thought provoking ballad (sure to develop into a full audience sing-a-long). Opening the arena outing is the extraordinary Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, a hands down headliner as well that will undoubtedly warm up the anxious audience. (Bet your life - Friday at Allstate Arena- Rosemont, IL: www.jamusa.com).

After captivating the country on "Rockstar: INXS" and subsequently opening for that very act with the Lovehammers, Marty Casey's also expanded his solo reach. Aside from several acoustic shows and the new single "I See Stars," he continuesGeorge Winston promoting the environmentally conscious jewelry line ("The Marty Casey Silver Elements Collection") with a showcase, signing and short set in the Chicago suburbs in conjunction with the Holiday Stroll celebration. (Worth a shot - Saturday at The Burr Ridge Village Center- Burr Ridge, IL: www.martycasey.org).

New age's primary pianist George Winston is a master of the seasons with plenty of Winter selections sure to pop up on his latest tour. But rather than only addressing snowy sounds within his signature sound, expect tidbits of all the other seasonal albums, plus the most recent release Coast Blues & Impressions - A Hurricane Relief Benefit (Dancing Cat Records). No matter what the material, sit back for a breathtaking performance of class, eloquence and musical ingenuity. (Bet your life - Tuesday and Wednesday at Metropolis Performing Arts Center- Arlington Heights, IL: www.metropolisarts.com).
Common Street Week: Stereophonics look back, Oh so cool Common
Monday, December 8, 2008

With three studio albums in three years, Windy City rapper genre is not just one of the genre's most prolific, but also amongst the most gifted. Universal Mind Control (G.O.O.D. Music/Geffen) features production from longtime pal Kanye West, plus The Neptunes, who've already scored the superstar a hit on the Urban & Rhythmic Crossover charts via the title track. But Common's crossing over in more than just musical contexts, recently expanding his acting resume to include "Wanted," "American Gangster," "Smokin' Aces" and next year's "Terminator Salvation."

Musiq Soulchild is also releasing records at a fairly steady streak with On My Radio (Atlantic) marking his second in two years. This second project for that label was produced by BlackKeyz and Dru Castro and includes the hit in The Stereophonicsthe making duet with Mary J. Blige "If You Leave." Expect a mixture of slick neo-soul, old school R&B and newer hip-hop influences that truly puts Soulchild in a class of his own."

Brit-poppers The Stereophonics may have never earned the American acclaim of like-minded acts Oasis or Blur, but that doesn't make the career retrospective Decade In the Sun (Fontana/ Vox Populi) any less appealing. If anything, it showcases the infectious alt-rockers' impressive evolution since debuting with Word Gets Around and switching from major label life to the indie ranks. Key singles include "Dakota," "Have a Nice Day," "Maybe Tomorrow" and the new tune "You're My Star."
