The Clash Weekend Report: The Clash recreated, Jagermeister Tour
Friday, December 19, 2008

Tennessee may be primarily known for country music, but the singer/songwriter circuit is growing astronomically well beyond Music Row. Based upon the MySpace/Paste approved compilation Ten out of Tenn., this tour of the same title seeks to showcase several upcoming indie rockers including Griffin House, Katie Herzig, Tyler James, Jeremy Lister, Butterfly Boucher, KS Rhoads, Matthew Perryman Jones, Andy Davis, Trent Dabbs and Erin McCarley. (Worth a shot - Friday at Schubas- Chicago, IL: ffwww.schubas.com).

The Clash will live on forever as one of punk's most powerful groups and its lauded legacy is the subject of this weekend's "Chicago Calling V- A Very Special Clash Christmas." The bill includes London Calling, All Mods Conned, Dag Juhlin and Lou Carlozo, plus members of members of The Midnight Shows, Mega Super Ultra, Red Plastic Buddha & Skapone. Outside of hearing an entire evening'sHinder worth of iconic hits, all proceed benefit the Carole Robertson Center for Learning. (Bet your life - Saturday at Schubas- Chicago, IL: www.schubas.com).

The annual Jagermeister Music Tour is known for a series of heavy handed acts and this year certainly continues in its aggressive tradition. Though all of 2008's players are popular according to the alternative rock charts, they all lack the dynamism previous tours have packaged, such as last fall's headlining stint from The Cult (alongside Action Action and The Cliks). This weekend, Hinder heads the bill with its blend of bland arena rock, Trapt continues to encompass nu-metal tendencies (about a decade too late), while the equally mechanical Rev Theory offers little promise as openers. (Fan club only - Sunday at The Rave Eagles Club- Milwaukee, WI: www.therave.com).
Fall Out Boy Street Week: Fall out fun, Reject the All-Americans
Monday, December 15, 2008

The Chicago boys who comprise Fall Out Boy will never earn the punk rock credibility of The Ramones or Sex Pistols, but the foursome is in first place by miles over today's pop/punk pack. Even if Pete Wentz is busy marrying and procreating with Ashlee Simpson, he and the other members still found time to deliver a studio CD a mere year after their last, continuing to be ahead of the genre's curve and writing contagious hooks with every peppy bass bounce. Folie a Deux (Island) includes guests as diverse as Elvis Costello, Blondie's Debbie Harry and Kanye West.

Unfortunately former tour mates All-American Rejects comprise everything that's wrong about modern rock/punk across When the World Comes Down (Geffen), which is once again steeped in additional sugar-wrapped formulas. The never too nasty All-American Rejects(or all that interesting) Stillwater players are capitalizing on commercial radio lacking originality and anything that will truly stand the test of time, even if the rhythms from the first single "Gives You Hell" do have annoying sticking power for the time being.

Playing the part of Ray Charles in the famous flick Ray may always be one of Jamie Foxx's most monumental career playing cards, but he hopes to continue carving out notable solo strides in the recording studio as well. Intuition (J Records) includes writing and production by The Dream, Timbaland, Tricky and Marsha Ambrosia (amongst others), while rapper T.I. turns in an impressive battle rap with the headliner throughout "Just Like Me."
