DahkaBrahka are a Ukrainian folk quartet hailing from Kiev. Their sound is traditional Ukrainian melodies mixed in with modern beats, and other influences of world folk music. The band consists of Marko Halanevych ( vocals and accordion), Iryna Kovalenko (vocals and piano), Olena Tsybulska (bass drum and percussion) and Nina Garenetska ( vocals and cello). All four in the band share vocal duties, giving the band a powerful and dynamic range. The band has played for crowds throughout the world and has won many fans at every stop.

On July 23, DahkaBrahka played a show in the upstate NY town of Trumansburg. This small town is nestled in the Finger Lakes region of NY, and is just a short drive from Ithaca. For the past 30 years, Trumansburg has hosted an event known as The Finger Lakes Grassroots Festival. This multi-day event features four stages and over 75 bands. For many, DahkaBrahka were the highlight of the event.

DahkaBrahka had an afternoon slot on Saturday. Taking the stage at 3PM, the members came out to a crowd showing support for the current struggles in Ukraine by waving Ukrainian flags. Clad in traditional folk clothing, the woman of the band wore long dresses, red lipstick and fur Shepard hats, while Marko was dressed in all black wearing tall boots, pants and a long tunic shirt. The musicians played a set that lasted for about an hour and a half. Their songs ranged from happy and vibrant to sometimes somber and haunting, revealing the band's internal turmoil over the current events in Ukraine. The rollercoaster of music was clearly felt by the audience who cheered, chanted and even cried as the band moved through their setlist. In between songs the members spoke of home, and shared memories from before the war with a longing in their eyes for their country, family, and friends. Needless to say, it was a very powerful and emotional performance for many.

DahkaBrahka should be on your must see list of live performances. They are currently on tour in the States with a return visit in the spring of 2023 scheduled for Ithaca, NY at the State Theater. And, if you're a fan of grassroots music of all kinds, consider making the trip to Trumansburg next year for the festival, you won't be disappointed with the music.
