Review and photos by Johnny Hall The Darkeness brought their tour to The Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, New Jersey on Friday, April 21st. The British group hailing from Lowestoft, Suffolk have been touring the States on their "Tour de Prance" in support of their latest release Pinewood SmileOn this stop of the tour the lads from England sauntered on stage dressed in outfits the looked straight out of the glam rock heydays. The four piece made up of brothers Justin Hawkins (lead vocals, lead and rhythm guitars) and Dan Hawkins (lead and rhythm guitars, backing vocals), Frankie Poullain (bass guitar, backing vocals) along with Rufus Tiger Taylor (drums, percussion) started with "Open Fire" and "Love Is Only a Feeling." Justin was a crowd pleasing front man right out of the gates, full of energy and often engaging the crowd. During their song "Southern Trains" Justin borrowed a set of eyeglass' from a fan in the crowd to wear onstage. The band also led the crowd in a rendition of "Happy Birthday" for a young fan turning 12. The Darkness played a 19 song set of new and older material with songs like "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" and "All The Pretty Girls" and a partial rendition of the Proclaimers "IÕm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" using a fans phone for the lyrics. It was obvious the band as well as the crowd were having fantastic time feeding of each otherÕs energy. The Darkness successfully mixed professional musicianship with a not so serious fun and campy humor and smash it altogether into a show reminiscent of Slade and the New York Dolls. With a sound that bridges a glass shattering falsetto vocals to some serious solid rock and roll - the Darkness deliver, in quite a unique fashion. If you are looking for a show full of electric camp and some serious musicianship than look to see if the Darkness carnival is setting up their tents near you soon! |
