Review and photos by Karen Grismer The veteran Buffalo based band, The Goo Goo Dolls, notably known for their anthemic hits "Iris", "Slide," "Name" and now their newest, "So Alive," are on tour in support of their eleventh studio album, Boxes. They performed at the Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI on a very chilly and overcast night to a sold out crowd of 8,000 people of all ages.As the lights dimmed, the Goo Goo Dolls stormed the stage with their instruments swinging and smiles just wide enough to show us that their natural charm was sure to follow. They are no strangers to the stage as the boys tour relentlessly promoting their latest music and monster hits while ensuring that their most fervent fans remain loyal. Starting off their set with the guitar driven "Over and Over," which is the first track off of Boxes, it packed a helluva punch, while Johnny Rzeznik and Robby Takac shouted "turn it up!" Fans were on their feet and would never need their seats again for the rest of show. Playing numerous hits such as "Slide," "Black Balloon" and "Name," only proved how much chemistry flows between the band. Johnny emotionally takes the lead vocals and guitar, while Robby beats his bass with controlled chaos and paves the way for Brad Fernquist's stunning guitar riffs. Korel Tunador keeps a steady tempo on his keyboard while drummer Craig Macintyre, setting the rhythmic backbone, vigorously massaged the skins while keeping all of the unbridled energy flowing into a steady groove. Playing a 90 minute set, they only performed a couple of songs from their newest release, but fans were taken on a musical journey throughout the Goo Goo Dolls entire career. Going as far back 1993's Superstar Carwash, Robby sang the candid "Already There." Fans had 23 years of musical history bundled into a one-night magical medley. With 11 albums and 23 years in the making, they seem stronger than they've ever been. |
