If you are familiar with the modern rockabilly music genre there is a good chance you have been exposed to the psychobilly / horrorbilly subculture. Horrorbilly and psychobilly share the musical influences of rockabilly with the addition of punk rock and horror based lyrics. Veterans of the genre are Nekromantix, who are currently out on the road celebrating 30 years of spooky rock and roll. On Wednesday May 8th, Nekromantix and their current touring partners the Brainiax and Rezurex made a stop at the Haunt in Ithaca, NY.

First up to the stage were the Brainiax. Donned in white lab jackets, these mad scientists brought their rock and roll alchemy to the crowd. The Brainiax hail from the Pacific Northwest and are a traditionally pieced rockabilly style band composed of standup bass, guitar and drums. The band played for about 30 minutes in true psychobilly fashion, fast songs one right after another, leading the way for Rezurex.

Rezurex are a four piece ensemble crawling out of L.A. like the living dead. Rezurex's set brought an electrifying vibe to the room. The mohawked front man, Daniel DeLeon, had his face half painted like a skull and wore skeletal painted leather. Singing songs of horror and mayhem, the band blasted through their set with crazed upright bass playing and ringing guitars. The guys in Rezurex showed that they know how to rock and roll.

Headlining the night were Nekromantix. The stage had been set for the band with their iconic Coffin Bass resting front and center amidst the stage lights. At 9:30 PM the band took the stage dressed in their traditional black t-shirts, black denim jeans and quiff hairstyles. With Kim Nekroman grabbing the coffin bass and vocals, Francisco Mesa on hollow body guitar, and Rene "Dlamuerte" Garcia playing a stand up drum set, the group played songs from their 30 year span. Nekroman is a madman on the bass, slapping the strings at warp speed. He is also a fantastic frontman who played off the energy of the crowd often speaking with fans from the stage and asking what songs they would like to hear, much to their delight. Playing an hour long set, Nekromantix wowed all in attendance.

If you are a fan of psychobilly you need to check out the 30th anniversary tour of the Nekromantix. The bands in the line up are all fantastic! So grab your leather jacket, roll up your sleeves and get ready to slam in a circle pit!
