It is the second day of the New Orleans Jazz Festival and the weather is beautiful. The big name artists this day are Phish, Robin Thicke, and Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters. Let’s not forget Boz Scaggs, Branford Marsalis and many, many more. It is a reality that one cannot not see them all and that choices must be made. The crowds were thick early in the day. The blues tent was the starting point with Guitar Slim, Jr and his brand of rockin’ blues. Zackary Richard opened the Acura stage with his driving Cajun, zydeco music for the fans.

Meanwhile on the other side of the Fairgrounds at the Samsung Galaxy stage, the Imagination Movers were giving a rousing show for the kids of the audience. Raw Oyster Cult followed them and the “joint was jumping”. Raw Oyster Cult is a local band made up of three members from the Radiators and John Gros from Papa Grows Funk. The blend was an immediate crowd pleaser.

Next up was the Royal Southern Brotherhood consisting of Mike Zito, Devon Allman (Gregg’s son), and Cyril Neville. Karl Dennison joined them on stage to play sax for two songs. This was a very powerful set but New Orleans bluebloods!

The Mavericks exploded on stage and gave one of the most rousing sets of the day! The Mavericks were invited to bring back their alternative country music after last years’ successful appearance. The dancing continued through the whole show in spite of the heat. Few bands return to the stage for a three-song encore at Jazz Fest.

Phish had a three-hour set at the Acura stage that got good word of mouth reviews. Robin Thicke headlined the Congo Stage and most thought his performance was good, but for some unknown reason he finished his set 30-minutes early.

Robert Plant and his newest band performed at the Samsung Galaxy stage and the show was magic. Plant and the band were not on tour, but as Plant explained, Quint Davis called him in England and urged him to bring the band over 5600 miles to perform at Jazz Fest this year.

The trip was well worth the effort for us. The former Led Zeppelin front man has taken some of those favorite Zeppelin classics and rewoven them into fresh new gems. One of those great nuggets was “Going to California” changing it to “Going To Louisiana.” “In The Mood,” “Black Dog,” and “Whole Lotta Love” were other examples of his resurrection of the old songs. The six Space Shifters embellished his explorations from the African roots of the blues to rock 'n' roll. Guitarist Justin Adams electrified "Fixin' to Die."
