Review and photos by Mary Andrews The beginning of the fourth day of Jazz Festival on April 28, 2016 started with an epic deluge of rain that lasted for two hours. As a result people rushed to the gospel, blues, and jazz tents to avoid the torrential rain. They don't call New Orleans the wetlands for nothing! As long as there is no lightning in the immediate area, the shows go on.This was a day of great guitar performances of both legends and up soon-to-be legends! Spencer Bohren started things off in the blues tent. He played guitar and lap steel while he sang. His roots brand of music had an enthusiastic crowd dancing during the downpour. His set spanned well over 20 years of his material and it was well worth the stop! The stout of heart endured the downpour for Sonny Landreth. That too was well worth hanging out in front of the Acura stage. Sonny is Louisiana's answer to the guitar hero. His slide guitar was magic and the booming thunder overhead just made the percussion unit that much more dynamic! Gary Clark, Jr. followed Sonny on the Acura stage to continue as the future guitar legend parade for the day. The set started out with "Bright Lights" and alternated between lively and slow jams during his set. Gary continues to get better with age. There were some sound issues during the set. The microphones were too low for his vocals for several songs and his guitar sound was set way too loud. Tedeschi Trucks Band's set was incredible. They made use of every second of their two hours to the maximum! They also utilized everyone in the band to the max and it is a LARGE band. They had two incredible guitarists make guest appearances in addition to their big band. Namely Jimmie Ray Vaughan and Billy Gibbons. The tribute to B.B. King was adorned with all four guitarists taking a slow blues solo. Susan held her own with the three men. She was in full tilt boogie mode with her vocals. Derek was on fire! "Midnight In Harlem" was a highlight. Across the fairgrounds, Elvis Costello mesmerized a large crowd at Gentilly. But one of the most fun sets on Thursday was Flo Rida's set at the Congo Stage! It seemed that he was having the time of his life and so was the crowd. He invited all the young ladies in the crowd to join him on stage and they were eager to oblige. There was a multitude of women on stage taking selfies with the singer as he sang without missing a note or word. It was a lot of fun for all and hursday ended much better than it started. |
