Review and photos by Johnny Hall Syracuse, NY had a beautiful spring night on May 20th but inside the Westcott Theater the atmosphere was steaming hot with the southern blues rock of The Record Company. Currently touring in support of their Grammy nominated Give It Back to You album, the band made a stop about a mile from Syracuse University and brought cool sounds of Smooth Hound Smith along for the ride.Smooth Hound Smith, hailing from Nashville Tn, had a unique sound that was a mix of foot drums, tambourines, fuzzy guitars, and outstanding vocals and harmonizing. Their songs have touched the heels of soul of Muddy Water's blues and a mix of early rock and roll. Zack Smith (guitars, vocals, foot drums, harmonica and tambourine) and wife Caitlin Smith (vocals, tambourine) were fantastic performers, their music was tight and they engaged well with the audience even getting rapt concertgoers to hoot and holler at the beginning. Smooth Hound Smith who are currently touring for their latest release Sweet Tennessee Honey, had a solid nine song set playing songs that included "My Heart's Not Broken Yet" and "Stopgap Woman Blues." Headliners for the night were the LA based band The Record Company. The three member group consisting of Chris Vos ( guitar, vocals, harmonica), Alex Stiff ( bass, guitar, vocals) and Marc Cazorla ( drums, vocals, piano) played a fiery 16 song set including songs like "On the Move" and " Hard Day Coming Down." The guys showed their musical talent with an acoustic set and a Beastie Boys cover of "So What Cha Want," turning it into a blues fueled jam. The band fed off the energy of the packed theater and the crowd loved everything they threw at them. Folks were dancing, smiling and having a great time feeling the heat from music. The Record Company has a down home feel good quality that fits in right in with Chicago roots or the muddy backroads of the Mississippi Delta and everywhere in between. |
