Lucky Boys Confusion are renowned for connecting with their fans. The stage was set in Madison last Thursday for a reggae-punk-pop fest. Chicago natives Lucky Boys include lead singer Kaustubh "Stubhy" Pandav, guitarists Adam Krier and Joe Sell, bassist Jason Schultejann and drummer Ryan Fergus - each bleed with individual flair and personality. On "Closer To Our Graves" the upbeat energy swelled and infected the crowd. Stubhy prowled the stage in striking fashion. His dual- colored hair whipped feverishly back and forth with Schultejann's frantic and bouncy basslines. "Breaking Rules" from Throwing the Game had the entire band feed off of each other on this power-pop gem.
The whole bands' energy was sustained with the firey and at the same time bubbly "Fred Astaire." The whole audience enthusiastically traded word for word with Stubhy. The band meld pop melodies and crunchy power chords effortlessly. On "Anything, Anything" the full frontal attack had the gas pedal floored as Adam Krier and Joe Sell traded jagged tempos. The audience resembled a sea of bobbing heads and wildly flailing arms. "The Struggle" caught many off guard with it's loose and kinetic chord structure. Many people mistakenly label their music ska when in fact their sound is grounded in elements of reggae along with dashes of rock, hip-hop, post-punk, pop and a peppering of metal as well.
On "Should Have Been Me" the romantic candles should have been lit for the personal and intimate mood transition from the rest of the set. On the ballsy "Hey Driver" the audiences' unabashed enthusiasm had the guy from the merch table help keep the crowd off the stage.
LBC has no intentions of ever slowing down. Just don't ask their fans to either.
