Review and photos by Karen Bondowski

What better way to ignite the tribal urges in all of us then attend a Soulfly concert? Frontman Max Cavalera, looking like he just stepped out of a long stint in the jungle with his matted hair, ripped fatigues and grizzled beard, charged in with a fury into the manic drive of "Prophecy." The band built the track as Cavalera's guitar assualt churned like a speeding train awaiting its inevitable collision. The headbangers in attendance wouldn't have it any other way. Flying his own colors by way of wearing a Soulfly t-shirt, Max and the band took its sonic assault to the streets with numbers such as "Execution Style," "Wasting Away," "No," "Attitude Fast" and "Eye for an Eye." All fast, furious and delivered with an intensity of a condemend man begging for just one more day on this Earth.
Soulfly While Soulfly is not reinventing the wheel they sure know how to keep it rolling with their eclectic brand of fusion metal and angry stage presence.
Openers Morbid Angel's fiery assault and relentless pile drive shot out of the gates so fast with "Rapture" that you weren't sure what hit you. The bands' foundation is built heavily on twin leads that drill new holes in your teeth, a drummer (Pete Sandoval) whose most subtle act would be to steal an old lady's purse on Mother's Day and bassist/vocalist Steve Tucker's deep throated primal screams that would surely scare any nearby pride of lions away.
Problem is this type of hardcore metal is very limited in its range - dripping with testosterone and brutally aggressive at first - it soon became apparent that every song that was played was like a broken record from Hell. Surely, a punishment that Lucifer would decree on any lover of melody, structure and chorus. The twisted deja vu kept going and going and going and going... on "Pain Divine," "Maze of Torment," "Dawn of the Angry," "Blood on My Hands" and the painful "Day of Suffering."
If only Morbid Angel could have renamed the last song "Night of Suffering" for all of us in attendance.
