In one of the most unique billings to play Nashville, folk rockers The Avett Brothers, with veteran punk stars Social Distortion opening, captivated music city's Bridgestone Arena Friday evening. While the pairing was certainly unique, the diverse crowd fully embraced both bands.

Social Distortion got the crowd warmed up with hits "Story of My Life" and their version of California country rock- "Bakersfield." The band also did their usual cover of Hank William's classic, "Six More Miles." Lead singer Mike Ness told the crowd that there would be no Sid Vicious without Hank Williams. He also joked that if Vicious and Williams were locked in a room together only one would survive, and his bets were on Williams. The band closed out their portion of the evening with another punk version of a country song, Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire."

With a giant white painted curtain falling to the floor, The Avett Brothers really got the night started. "January Wedding" and "Down With a Glistening Shine" were standouts early on. "At The Beach" transported fans to warmer weather, while the temperature started to fall outside. The band played through as many hits as they could in their two-hour set.

A hush fell over the arena as Seth Avett was left alone with just his guitar to sing "The Ballad of Love and Hate." Drunken patrons shouting from the crowd, more anxious to hear their own voice than the brilliantly crafted lyrics, quickly ruined the tone of the song. Scott Avett traded off with his brother to lead the audience through "Murder in the City." The small acoustic portion of the set was a chance for the trio to show off what separates them from other acts, their perfectly blended vocals.

The Avett Brothers took time to repeatedly thank the Nashville fans for always making the city feel like home. They closed out the evening with the fast paced "Talk on Indolence." Loud cheering from the arena brought the band back for an encore that included an extended version of favorites "Kick Drum Heart" and "I and Love and You." The trio then gathered around one microphone to sing "Down to the River to Pray," a perfect ending to the evening.
