Review: Jeez, where do I begin. Now, whereas Daltrey's voice was blown out on that show, and many preceding that in the last few decades, the show at the Gorge showed he had a shocking amount of reserved. Dunno where it came from.
I find the redo Kids are Alright too corny. Ditch that. True, Townshend is struggling with leads.
But then listen to Live at leeds and see how consummately he can pull it off should he want to. Woodstock also comes to mind for wonderful, if succint, leads.
Perhaps a recording of the Gorge will back up my claims that if Daltrey's voice is given enough rest, he can sing pretty much his full range. Not sure what the formula is for that.
Palladino is in no way adequate for the show. Neither is Simon. Plenty of bass players of all levels of fame come to mind for the slot. As ususal, excepting Zak, (and no, you're dead wrong about Moon not using hi hats enough - too many examples to list there!) the other members amount to excess baggage.
The Who, as recently as last October, show how they can blow away a host of artists, many thirty years and more their junior. Go watch the video again and gage carefully the reaction of the crowd.
Tommy is not overrated. Get over it. Many, many brilliant moments. I fully agree Quadrophenia is underrated. Not my me, of course.

Review: Hey, Ghost of John, your analogy on Ernie Banks is not a fair one. He quit baseball when his ability to play was no longer viable. Had he stayed, I'm sure the press would be tearing him a new asshole. The Who haven't been so wise. They deserve to be critiqued by putting forth their product. Good or bad.

Review: I am a Who fan. I have been for over 30 years. There are few truer fans than I. That's why it hurts to see so many of us whine and cry when someone pans The Bloody 'Oo. We must face the music, pun intended. The current Who do not matter. It is as plain and simple as that. Some may say The Who died with Keith, but they really stopped being relevant as a group in 1983. That doesn't make their contribution to rock any less significant. Now to the matter at hand. The review of the Chicago show, outside of the obvious wrong song titles, was a bit problematic. First, and foremost, Live at Leeds is hardly a marginal album. Many critics have called it,arguably, the best live album ever.
Next, to complain about Pete's voice is a clue to the reviewers naivete towards all things Who. Part of the glory of Pete singing is that he can't sing well. Who fans know it, and Pete knows it. He never could. But that is what makes Pete taking the mike so great. He can fool you by putting his emotions into the song, singing in a way Roger never could. After all Pete knows what the song is about, he wrote it. The same is true of his solo guitar playing. He readily admits to, and often jokes about, his shortcomingds on soloing. To criticize Pete on either of these subjects is superfluous.
I do agree Roger shouldn't try to hit notes he can't. They should tailor the songs to their current capabilities. And maybe that's the whole problem of this, and any other review of aging musicians/performers. Don't try and compare them to what they were. We don't expect Ernie Banks to play ball they same way he did in the 50's do we?? Neither should we expect more from any of these guys (Who, Stones, Plant, that Bowie guy, and no he isn't relevant anymore). Hey the old farts are alright!(sic)

Review: I went to the tweeter center concert recently. I bought lawnseats for one simple reason: the Who wasn't worth sitting up close and the price wasn't worth it too. If it was just Plant peforming, I would've bought closer seats, but nay. Anyhow, I thought Plant peformed a good if not great show. Still a great voice after all these years and he made a SMART choice in not trying to hit the high notes and instead opting for the lower and more emotional tones. The band itself was excellent. I had a great time for the first hour or so. The Who? I sat down for most of the set. I was trying to hold my beer in thinking they might do something extraordinary. But I was disappointed, yet, not surprised that they played all the songs I have on my only cd of theirs (a greatest hits lp). My ears ached whenever Daltry tried in vain to hit those impossible notes and the show sounded just as what it was: a bunch of old men trying to sing. I only stayed because my buddy heard they might !
be worth it. They weren't. I have a bit of advice for the the Who: hang up your guitars and microphones cuz when two old geezers are singing a song about teenage rebellion (My Generation), it's painfully obvious that they should've hung their act up a long time ago. Hope I die before I get old!

Review: Robert Plant was actually a fairly decent *warmup* act for The Who. Too bad Jimmy Page couldn't quite "keep up" with the Black Crow's and The Who back in 2000...aching back and all....Too bad Jimmy hadn't hired a lead guitarist to do his work...
Perhaps The Who will let the reformed Led Zeppelin warm up for them in 2003? Just hope Jimmy Page can hold up his end of the deal...and not have to call it quits after 2 shows, or so.
Strange thing is...as a Who fan I had felt no sense of "competition" between The Who and Robert Plant/Led Zep, whatever. It has been very amiable and they have praised each other. Too bad the "reviewer" had to drag it into the mud :^(
Oh well, to each his own sewage....

Review: Bravo, Brad for a brave review. I disagree with many of the people I've read on your Rant or Rave page. Hey, people let the man have an opinion! It is so well written that I'm sure you struggled to write what YOU heard. I also know that you are a Who fan with serious questions that needed to be addressed.
I saw the show also and disagree with you on Townshend's playing. I thought at times his leads were absolutely brilliant and at other times choppy, irregular and explosive. To me (my opinion people) that is what gives the Who their punky edge. Not playing note for note perfectly, but exacting the mood and the edge with each explosively jagged out chord. Brad, I think you were seeking some kind of studio perfection.
I agree with you more on Daltrey's voice. At times I thought he reached the highs with some semblance of equity to his finer material in the early and mid 70's, but more often than not, he failed. I agree he should, for the most part, accept his age and fate and pull back some. Anyway, I appreciated your review as I agreed with a good part of it, but failed to understand the major point of Townshend's guitar playing. Thanks for the debate and hearing me out.

Review: I can't comment about the Chicago show referenced here, but I did see The Who burn up Hershey Park on July 29 this year. My main point of disagreement is Roger's voice, which, at least on that night, was strong and clear. The rest of the review seems hung up on money - The Who are touring for money! $150 a seat! Pete licensed 'Bargain' for an automobile commercial! Quelle supris! Absolutely shocking that a man who writes and performs music for a living would charge money for it!
The only other point I'll make is that the success of The Who this tour (it is expected to be the highest grossing rock tour this summer) points out the paucity of rock music today. One of the neat things about the crowd at Hershey was the mix of people (old stoners, yuppies, and a surprising number of teenagers). That they would all reject the junk on the radio or on tour in favor of a band without a hit single for over twenty years is indicative that these kids recognize quality!

Review: Brad Walseth,
I think the Who are very brave to continue, especially after the death of the most influential bassist of all time, and might I add that John Entwistle is the greatest bassist of all time.
Your review was horrible. I think you suck at your job. I'm sure that Daltrey, Plant, and Townshend would have a good laugh at your horrible review.
In the end you thought that the Who and Robert Plant did a fair job, yet you continued to bash them, which is not fair.
I'm going to see the Who in Minneapolis on September the 24th, and all the reviews I've read have said that the Who are doing great, and that the songs are powerful, and Dalrey's voice is awesome and Townshend's guitar work is unbelievable. And being that they're my favorite band, I'm quite positive that I'll enjoy them.
And yes, Brad, you're dealing with a 17 y/o, who is influenced by the Who, and I consider them the greatest band of all time.
But like the old saying goes: "To each his own".
But Brad, do us all a favor, go f*ck yourself where the sun doesn't shine.
Cheerio, asshole.

Review:The Who killed last night. Had 23rd row dead center. I have seen the Rolling Stones 4 times (and this may be blasphemy to some) and all those times couldn't add up to the power, set list & faithful sound as last night's Who show alone. Zak Starkey was great. One great moment happened when apparently Pete's guitar was off key and was 'screeching' according to Daltrey, causing him to forget the lyrics to "Love Reign O'ver Me'. He was trying to get Pete to stop the song halfway through, but he wouldn't (I don't know if it's because he's almost deaf or what).
So they finished the song and Daltrey (obviously pissed off, shaking his head and screaming to Pete) "We're doing it again and again until we get it fucking right!" and they completely repeated the entire song. They played 2 hours and 30 minutes. Robert Plant kicked ass too, did 5 Zep tunes including Whole Lotta Love as the encore.
I could have sat in the sky box for free with free eats and drinks, but I would have paid the $165 again in a heartbeat to be that close again.

Review: This is my first time seeing this website. Is this a 'National Lampoon' type of thing? Just wondering, as Brad Walseth's "review" of The Who in Chicago was a complete joke. But it was certainly humorous :^)
Was Brad actually at the show? If so, why is he complaining about songs that weren't even played that night...or any other night on the current tour (The Seeker)????
I think a "reviewer" should always go to a show with an open mind....clearly Brad had decided many, many years ago that he does not like The Who, hence the mud throwing at Daltrey by him at every opportunity.
And the bit about Pete bringing a lead guitarist along on tour...I think that was tossed in by Brad simply to raise the ire of Who fans. To all except those who have their head in the sand, Pete is playing better guitar than he has in years and is head and shoulders above any other guitarist out there BAR NONE!!!
But thanks for the good laugh! Why do I get the feeling that Brad will be gushing with kind words for the Rolling Stones....or whatever you care to call them these days (I prefer to call them the Mick, Keith, and Charlie Band)? Talking about the Rolling Stones on Ice (for $300)...sheesh.

Review: Your review of The Who concert betrayed your blatant bias towards Led Zeppelin and dislike for The Who. Roger Daltrey is singing better now than he ever has. Maybe Chicago was a bad night for him. Your suggestion that Pete Townshend hire someone else to play lead guitar is insulting. Pete Townshend is the guitarist for The Who, and a damn fine one. We don't want to see anyone else in that role. With your laughable reasoning I suppose every venerable band should get some hotshot lead guitarist to stand in for the actual guitarist in the band. What a joke. Here's the hard truth. Led Zeppelin could never hold a candle to The Who and the movie "The Kids Are Alright" proves it, as does this tour and The Concert For New York City. Good day.

: Review: Brad, I'm not sure we were at the same show. Sounds to me like you had more than a few preconceptions about what it was you were about to hear.
I've been going to Who concerts for 20 years, and this was the best show I've seen. That doesn't mean the band was as good as it was 30 years ago, but then who in their right mind would expect that? Other areas of disagreement:
1. Daltrey's voice no longer has the range it once had, but it remains strong. If he needs a bit of help once in awhile, so what? It's not like they grabbed some mope from a Tinley Park bar band to front the show.
2. The crowd certainly was not horrified that the band played "Love Reign ..." twice. If anything, the people around me were bemused by the whole episode, as was Townshend.
3. Townshend was in no way sloppy or feeble. My goodness, he was rather remarkable, even inspired at times. In some cases — "Bargain" comes immediately to mind — he breathed new life into old songs.
4. The set was not "hugely produced." In fact, compared to previous tours it was rather spare. The mix emphasized Townshend's guitar work to great effect, and from our seats in the 30th row, even Bundrick's keyboard work clearly was audible. P.P.'s bass was subdued, but appropriately so, don't you think? A new bass signature would be ridiculous — at least for the purposes of this tour.
5. The Who's place in the hierarchy of rock'n'roll certainly isn't cemented by their Mod singles. That merely provided them with the practical means and artistic platform to do more ambitious work, like the wonderful "Tommy," "Who's Next" and "Quadrophenia." Those three albums provided them with a place in rock's pantheon and offered them opportunities to demonstrate that they truly are/were rock's greatest live act.
Your review was interesting and in some cases thought-provoking, but you were too hard on they guys. Your preoccupation with money — nepotistic paychecks, ticket prices, commercials, etc. — suggest that you're a bit jaded. So lighten up, homes. Is rock dead? Of course. But it will outlive us all — thanks in no small part to The Who.
Bruce

Review: Haha, that has to be the best Ozzfest review I've ever read! One thing though..didn't P.O.D play a long set this year? Well if not it sure seemed long, and boring. I know the last time they were at Alpine for Ozzfest they only did a couple songs because thier plane was late getting in or something. Well whatever the case, most of the people in the seats had thier backs turned to the stage watching the bottle/Sod fight between lawn and seats. Much needed entertainment while POD was onstage.

Ken, Chicago, IL 08/20//02
artist: Ozzfest 2002
Review: Once again another good review. I attended the Chicago show the day before and had fun. Down is an awesome band but at the Chicago show I was a bit dissapointed in them because Phil seemed way out of it. It also can be that it just didn't compare to the more intimate show they did a couple months back.
The only thing I didn't agree with the review was the System of a Down comments. I was surprised myself that Rob Zombie played before them, but I don't think they "were in the right place at the right time with a couple of catchy songs." SOAD is a band that have worked their asses off to get the slot which they deserved on Ozzfest. They are one of few bands that have performed 3 out of the 7 Ozzfest shows (1998, 1999, & 2002) and it wouldn't be a surprise to see them do this gig again in the years to come.

artist: Bowie - "Earl Slick"
Review: I have now seen Earl Slick perform with David Bowie 13 out of the 15 times I have seen him. I tell you, he gets better every time I see him. (What is it with these guys; do they spend weekends together in a "time capsule"?) It is important to devulge: Earl Slick moves me like now other--when he makes "magic" on his electric guitar. I miss his incredible talent as when he went solo on "Station to Station" on the 1983 tour. Furthermore, I missed his magic again during "Stay," as Bowie did not play that in San Francisco. Although Bowie is 3/4 of the pie....more "solo's" by "Slick" would have "completed me." Bring on more Earl!!!!

Review: 8.4 Alpine Valley WI
Early morning, sitting by the side of a lake. Ducks, a dozen seagulls perched on the post of a pier. Milky sky. A water skier roars past going "eeyow!" So, what happened yesterday? Lots of press at the show so you perhaps know already that order and courtesy prevailed, security was cool, there were no riots, no deadhead freaks pissing or passing out on anyone's lawn. It was a musical afternoon and evening which pleasured everyone, it would seem, and provoked none. Best light show I've ever seen. Everyone backstage walking on air. So far, so good. It's cool. We can do this again. The general consensus, voiced over and over, was that the hope of the world lies in music -whoops! Down goes the water skier! - that something more than entertainment was happening - a coming together and mutual recognition of who we were, who we are and who, God willing, we shall continue to be. And we knew, know, that the world was watching, half hoping the good hope, half waiting for any excuse to write this non-aligned force we represent off the map of reality. Non aligned? Well, other than in the mutual acceptance of that tired old peace & love program. You know the one Generations are supposed to die, dammit. Garcia dropped off, that was supposed to write paid to our account. Well, it nearly did, but his physical absence from our stage has become, in a way, its own kind of presence. When Phil sang "Morning Dew" it loomed extra large. I did mostly Jerry's songs in my own set, which wasn't what I had planned but I'm, frankly, not altogether responsible for what comes out of me when I'm up there. I try to let the spirit move me when it will, though said force has often got better things to do than wiggle my tongue and fingers. When I when I wandered onstage there were scores of cameramen filming me, right up against the lip of the stage. I guess I'm a bit thick, somehow I don't expect these things - at least not for my set. But there they were and I managed to look over their heads and forget about them in short order. With 35,000 other people to attend to, it wasn't hard. I played the venue like a club. Told them not to forget to tip the waitress. Found that a sea of faces isn't any more intimidating than a wading poolful. Of course, my sound was fluffed at the onset, as is generally the case, (test me! test me!) but I didn't know about it until later so that was okay. If I'm okay, the audience is okay. The love, as always, was palpable. Food of the gods. When things go wrong for me, it hurts them too. When things go right, we all swim in the same sea of sunshine.

The Grateful Dead was truly, undeniably, present in the Other Ones' show, the highs, the lows, the tedium and the triumph, the tenacity of group mind that makes the show an intellectually as well as emotionally challenging experience; the risk taking, the safe spots, the venturing out and returning. The establishment of motifs which re-emerge now and again as stabilizing points in a referendum of familiar strangeness -teases of tunes that never materialize, segues new and old - "China Cat" into "I know you Rider" - Born Crosseyed in the middle of Dark Star! - I wish I was a headlight on a Northbound train.
Yes. Maybe so.

Review: I saw BLeU open for Puffy AmiYumi at Park West, and I immediately fell in love! The first thing I thought of when I saw him was his sideburns. They're crazy. And oh-so-loveable. After Puffy AmiYumi performed, I went straight to BLeU--he was autographing CD's. I bought one, of course, and had a few pictures taken (he shows the ladies what a superstar can be. Hahah). He was very sweet and nice, everything I'd hoped for. I of course gushed on about how incredible his performance was. I am *so* in love with BLeU (since when has he been William? Aw man...) It was his birthday that night, too. Happy 26th, BLeU!BR>

Review: having just been to Area:Two in Denver on the 10th, reading this review AFTER seeing Denvers (SOLD OUT!) show i have to agree with all you have said here. Bowie was definately in the best form i have seen (but when hasnt he been since the ill-fated "David Live" LP) being still a million miles high from Saturdays show but a bit sad that it is all over now, reading your revies of the Chicago Area:Two brought it ALL back home to me here on Monday - as if i needed reminding! the only thing i would add to your Bowie review is the nearly 3 minute last line of Ziggy Stardust ... "ZIGGY PLAYED GUITAR" which is still reverberating thru my brain and i hope it never goes away. i am hoping that he finished Chicago in the same incredible way.
Thnaks for the space to speak on t his as it was such an incredible show, Bowie truly outdid himself am=nd Moby should certainly re-think his decision to try and recover an audience that, at least here in Colorado was definately spent after Bowie's incredible set.
Hope you all had as much fun as i did!

Jack Straw, Paris, Texas 08/13/02
artist: Jackson Pollack
Review: "When the band bit into the meat of their songs they proved to be as engaging as ever, but, unfortunately, many of their lengthy jams were just to blase." This comment is typical of those who don't understand or feel the message of this music. If you are used to trite, hooky songs that are conveniently wrapped up in three minutes, then this experience is not for you. This music is spirited, brave and tranportive. These "directionless jams", not dissimilar from late sixties Miles Davis, with a bit of John Cage and Cecil Taylor thrown in, would be hailed as groundbreaking had it not been played by the surviving members of the Grateful Dead, the most misunderstood musical group in history. I promise you there is nothing unintentional about anyones playing. And please, don't mock Deadheads. We know more than you think.

Review: I couldn't agree with you more on the graduation party feeling. Everytime I see a band from the 80's playing live nowdays it brings out so much nostalgia. I can't help feeling like a teenager again. Everyone I talk to about Cinderella is hoping and "patiently" waiting to hear some new material from them. I hope it happens, I pray that it happens. All we can do is wait. Thanks

Review: I've been playing Cinderella songs on the Radio for 20 years now, on such stations as Rock102/Springfield MA, I-95/Bridgeport, WCCC/Hartford & now, currently on 99Rock/New Haven. I agree Cinderella is underrated, MTV didn't help matters any, & Toms' voice is so powerful, it's scary. They should release a new album now (the songs are written, but they're having a problem w/a record company).

Review: I saw the show on June 19th near Pittsburgh. I was blown away by both Cinderella and Poison. They rock. C.C.Deville is a terribly underated guitar player. He is a ball of fire! Tom Keifer is definetly an amazing talent. Cinderella needs to put an album out soon. I loved Poison's show. That was the first time I saw it andwould see it again. I had front row center seats by the way. I graduated high school in 1990 and would love to see a comeback of those hairband groups which did have talent like a Poison or Cinderella. It will only take one great song to get radio play all over the USA and that could be the beginning. Time will tell.

Review: Park West. This was the second time I have seen Bleu live, I saw him open up for train at the house of blues. I have been a Bleu Fan for over a year now. And I still love his music. His lyrics speak loud and clear to anyone with a pulse. He is a great move away form the corporate driven sounds sounds of that fill the radio airwaves. He is an original, a true artist. Very few bands can match their CD quality in a live show. Sorry, to say this but not even Weezer, whom I love... yet noy so great live anymore. Bleu exceeds all expectations. He rawks out and makes you wanting more. I did. I thought his set at the Park West was way too short. But for that half hour he blew me and my friends away... yet again. If you get a chance to see Bleu live, it's worth your trouble. Buy Headroom, it's amazing... every song on that albulm is great. For those interested, www.bleutopia.com for more info on Bleu.
Peace and love your music.
