Review: i think your review of the pete yorn concert in milwaukee was off base. while well written you missed the mark on pete's music. while his band gave a bit of a harder edge to his thoughtful and intrpospective music, i thought it actually added a more resonant depth and clarity that was missing on some songs on the cd. well, thanks anyway for taking the time to listen to me.

Review: I just want to let everyone know how totally cool and amazing garbage is. I finally got a chance to see them do a full show! They usually open up for bands and I was ecstatic to hear that they were gonna finally do a real tour. They never sounded better on stage. Shirely was so into it, even though she had a bit of laryngitis, as she told the crowd, but it was surely hard to tell. She was in top form in my opnion. They performed all the songs u'd expect to hear, all the hits but then she asked the audience for requests! This was amazing, and so she then performed 'Girl Dont Come' and 'Get Bizzy with the Fizzy'..2 amazing b sides.
I am just so happy I didn't miss this experience. ANyone wants to see photos, email me !

artist: pete yorn
Review: i tried to understand where you were coming from, but i feel as though your thoughts on keeping the songs very tame and acoustic were slightly off. dirty bird (pete band) plays an important role in petes music, as well as the live shows, to remove that would be to remove a part of the music. the songs arent acoustic on the album, so it would be just as much a change for the songs to be played simple and acoustic as you think it was for them to be slightly more up tempo and "rockier". i think part of pete as a touring artist is making the songs very strong and full with the band behind him, i think it makes his show stronger and he likes to rock out. i dont think hes an artist who would prefer to do a small intimate emotional one man acoustic show. he seems more satisfied with getting the crowd to respond and get their blood flowing with rocking sounds. i cant count how many times hes said in concert "come on people!!"

i do appreciate you giving the album and pete as a songwriter as much credit as you did though. many critics tear the artist apart but you voiced your opinion very maturely, giving them credit but stating your reasoning as well.
thanks :)

The only lineup the B-52s are a part of these days is at the local precinct. On charges of stealing their fans money. If you bought a ticket never fear, your money will be fully refunded and the band will serve out it's community service by not performing.

Mike, Barrington, IL 04/26/02
May I please bring your attention to the fact that a certain website is advertising the "complete Summerfest lineup", however does not list the B52's as a scheduled act, and further however, that same website has a very slick link to some kind of Pollstar search thing which in fact shows the B52's scheduled at the Marcus in early July. My attorney has been notified.

ps: the fact that a certain editor could care less about Fred and the gang is not an acceptable excuse for this gross omission.

Artist: Monte Montgomery
venue: Shank Hall, Milwaukee, 4/13/02
Review: Around 8:45 p.m., as soon as the opening act exited, a large group of people (including me) filled in the formerly open area in front of the stage in anticipation of Monte's arrival. Monte, drummer Phil Bass and bassist Lonnie Trevino hit the stage about 9:20 p.m. I was fortunate to snag a spot just to the left of Lonnie's mic. The first set opened with the old standbys, and Monte came out smokin' from the get-go. In fact the entire first set had an absolutely breakneck pace. It was almost as if Monte was trying to see how many songs he could do in an hour. When Set Your Soul Free ended, I expected him to launch into some repartee with the crowd, but no such luck. I think he said "Thank you" and moved right into an awesome version of River, complete with a very east-Indian opening, huge amounts of feedback, and Phil's terrific drum solo. By Wishing Well (song #6) I was wishing for some interaction with the crowd, but the band was all business during the first set. Wh! irlwind kicked major butt; Monte had the whole room singing the HEY HEYS and there were pumped fists and waving arms everywhere I could see. All On Me was slow at first...Monte seems to be playing it really slow these days but once he got into the guitar solo it was awesome. I thought the sound mix was kind of muddy that night - or maybe I was just too close to the stage to really hear things properly. When Will I was wonderful, with Monte riding the feedback dragon out to the edge and then pulling it back just short of the cliff. I was hoping Monte would do some of the "just the guys", "just the girls", "just this person" stuff but maybe he saves that for the Texas crowds. Anyway the first set was over in about an hour and during the intermission when I saw Monte I said, "Talk to us!!" He said he'd talk to me in a few minutes and I said, NO, NOT ME, talk to the us from the stage. Monte's interaction with the crowd is usually a hallmark of his shows, and not seeing the usual stage persona displayed was a little weird to me. On to set 2. The guys came back and sat down at the front of the stage and started playing Magnolia, with Phil playing just a snare with brushes. They also did a very elegant version of Leaving Paradise, though Monte sounded like he had a little trouble hitting the falsetto at the end. Because the guys were sitting down, a few people further back were yelling "Down in front!" so Monte, Phil and Lonnie each took a turn standing up in a very dramatic fashion. Various people were yelling requests and Monte said, "I've got one in mind, but thanks for caring." He did note that someone paid him $20 to play the next song, and we were then treated to Sunday Song, with Lonnie carrying off the alto harmony very nicely. Then Monte joked about people giving him $20 bribes and said, "keep your twenty bucks and go buy a CD instead of downloading everything off Napster" ;-)
At that point Monte said he would play one more request. He noted that the previous night was the 50th show for KaTman, a fan who flew up from Dallas for the weekend ("50 shows in 465 days," KaTman piped up) and said he would play KaTman's request. When Monte lit into Voodoo Chile I thought the crowd would explode!!! My notes say stuff like "CHANNELING," "Phil killing drums," "Monte WAY OUT THERE," "Jimi is smiling," "breathtaking," and "I'm forgetting to breathe". It was an absolute MONSTER rendition, the best version of Voodoo Chile I've ever heard anywhere by anyone. If someone had arrived late and paid $15 and saw that song alone and then left, it would have been worth every cent (I noticed KaTman was totally blissed out during this :-). During Monte's last solo, he was really channeling way out into the stratosphere, there are no words to describe it - in fact, except for his guitar, the room was DEAD SILENT because everyone was totally zoned in on his solo. Truly a remarkable moment even among the many remarkable moments Monte has given us. Of course at the end the crowd went totally freakin' NUTZ, at which Monte said, "I forgot that one part on guitar so I had to ad lib"...then "We've come so far to play for you people and it's always worth it. Thank you for making us feel at home." (Monte LOVES playing in Milwaukee!!!) So they launched into Took Too Long which included the usual awesome Monte guitar solos as well as Lonnie's amazing popcorn bass solo (during which Monte left the stage) and a killer drum solo by Phil, the master blaster. Then Monte came back and did another of his!
"where the hell is this coming from??" solos, complete with fingerpicking and major feedback. Phil got another drum solo then the guys did a couple of funny faking-everybody-out not-quite endings. They left the stage to the usual thunderous applause and chants and stomps of MONTE MONTE MONTE. Before the encore, Megan passed 3 shots up to the stage and Monte did a tequila toast to the crowd - "Milwaukee, thank you!!" Little Wing was awesome as usual. Monte's accompaniment to Lonnie's vocals was amazing - I wondered if his guitar would explode. An awesome ending to a wonderful show.

SET 1 - 1st & Repair, Hoping That You'd Slow Down, Set Your Soul Free, River, Tug of War, Wishing Well, Whirlwind, All On Me, When Will I
SET 2 -("unplugged" and all 3 seated up front) Magnolia, Leaving Paradise; (back to normal) Sunday Song, Voodoo Chile (Slight Return), Took Too Long (incl. Stairway to Heaven tease)
ENCORE: Little Wing

venue: Rave - Milwaukee - 4/16
Review: Checked out Elbow and Pete Yorn last nite at the Rave... Take the venue out of the equation and it was a pretty good nite. Elbow was purely amazing. The highlight of the nite for me. Pete Yorn's vocals are no where near the quality in real life as they are on cd. It's amazing what production teams can do. Yorn did have a good show though. As usual the Rave's worse than sub-par acoustics swallowed all quality sound. The scene was made worse by the fact that they have a habbit of having levels too high and distort vocals. Actually hit moments where rythm and drums where so powerful that people's ears hurt and you couldn't even hear Yorn's words while his lips moved... All in all Elbow (Grade A-) Yorn (solid B)...

Oh yeah - 4got to mention the bar was still un-Godly over priced and their crowd was cheery as every... (Those freakin people are far to masochistic for it to be healthy...)
Cheers

Review: Hmm...tall bald man singing and writing all the songs, Jimmy on the drums, female on bass and Asian man on guitar...Nope not like the Pumpkins at all! You're right!! Hey I was at Sunday's show. Come on how can you not compare Zwan to the Pumpkins!? Billy's voice is so distinct if he sung opera it would still sound like the Pumpkins.

Review: Did the person who wrote this review even go to the Double Door show? Given comprarisions to The Pumpkins are unavoidable, but to say that they are simply The Pumpkins with new people is WAY off the mark. This writer needs to hear one of the Indianapolis shows. And then the writer needs to take their head out of their ass.

Review: This review was favorable to Zwan, which i appreciate as i saw them in Columbia, MO and i thought they were incredible. My problem is that the writer consistently compares Zwan with Smashing Pumpkins. Zwan is a different band. If you didn't go into it looking for similarities, you wouldn't find as many. People right off the bat can't wait to compare the two, when it's too early for comparison. Review the show you're at... not the past!

Thanks for the review! FWIW, Billy reportedly had the flu last night so that may help explain his lack of enthusiasm.

Review: I was at the Aragon in Chicago on April 6th, and I just want to say it was amazing. There are no words to describe Gwen's amazing energy, or how it was almost a religious experience for me. I would spend another $77 again on tickets for that again. Peace, Love, And No Doubt

I dig your site because it's really up to date and laid back.
I think you site should cover upcoming singer/songerwriters, give little reviews about that 'somebody' that you just happened to catch at that rinky dink bar. And the show just blew you away!!!

Review: What can I say? As one of the lucky Stormtroopers who got to perform with No Doubt at the show in Chicago on April 6th, I LOVED IT! Gwen and the rest of the band were great. They were as stoked to have us there as we were to be there. As you may or may not know, No Doubt are big Star Wars fans and often play bits of star wars music at there concerts and on there CDs.
We Presented them with a plaque making them official "friend of the 501st" (our group - www.501st.com) and also gave them our "Got Armor?" shirts. Gwen got a special one of a kind Baby t.
We got to hang with them in their dressing room and in ours. It was a time we will never forget.
The security and management were also very cool.
We all hope that we get the chance to do this again, and hope the audiance enjoyed the show as much as No Doubt and us Stormtroopers did!

Review: Greetings, I was one of the 8 Stormtroopers. I was lucky enough to hug Gwen at the end of the show. One of our members contacted No Doubt's road manager and they thought having a few Troopers would be cool. We were very happy to be there. It was an awesome experience!!
No Doubt and all their people were just as nice as possible. They were so down to earth and friendly, I really didn't expect that from a group with their popularity. THANK YOU NO DOUBT!
Here is my site with info and pics of that wonderful evening if you're interested:
