Gary Numan |
Roman Remains |
Review and photos by Mary Andrews The mysterious Gary Numan took the stage at the Rialto Theatre like a fast running locomotive and there was no getting off the train for over 90 minutes! Gone is the sharp dressed androgynous singer from the 1980's. Instead, he has reinvented himself to become a powerhouse, tour de force performer. He has aged well and his performance is on par with those half his age. There was no banter throughout the set other than a quick "hello" and "thank you." The set started with the large sound of "Resurrection" and slid into "I Am Dust." Nine of the songs were from his latest release, Splinter, Songs From A Broken Mind. Sprinkled in between were older favorites like "Metal," "A Prayer For The Unborn," and the obligatory, but still infectious "Cars." This was an all-consuming, innovative experience to say the least. It is little wonder that groups like Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson cite Numan as a huge influence. His new material is his best work to date. You be a part of the Numan live experience and wallow in the afterglow after the show! Numan is touring with two other acts on making their way to SxSW. The first opener was Roman Remains with Liela Moss and Toby Butler from UK's The Duke Spirit. Their music is a combination of electro, dance and industrial sound. Liela immediately jumped into a powerhouse performance that formed a compelling set from a seasoned and accomplished performer. The second set was from Big Black Delta comprised of frontman Jonathan Bates (vocalist/bassist from Mellowdrone) and a drummer. Bates runs his digital music from his laptop and dances across the stage in between. The 45-minute set seemed to be a long anticipatory period for the real deal - which was Gary Numan. |
