Paula Cole

Review by Andy Argyrakis

Twenty years after mesmerizing audiences as a vocalist on Peter Gabriel's "Secret World Live" tour and soundtrack album, Paula Cole is still going strong as a solo artist, even if she's flying a bit under the radar these days. After a string of major label albums that spawned hits like "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?" and "I Don't Want To Wait," the singer/songwriter takes a completely DIY approach, even going as far as raising funds from fans through Kickstarter.

She more than gives faithful their money's worth thanks to another contemplative collection of soft-spoken pop, adorned by absolutely pristine pipes and understated but nonetheless gorgeous production. Songs like "Strong Beautiful Woman" and "Imaginary Man" come from her typically empowered perspective without ever coming across as preachy, while "Life Goes On" offers comfort amidst loss as the angelic singer sounds like she's soaring above the heavens.

Paula Cole appears with Melissa Etheridge and Friends at Ravinia on Saturday, June 29: www.ravinia.org.
