Review and photos by Mary Andrews

The title to this article should really be I've been to the bar, to church, to the crossroads, and back to the bar in an hour and a half! I had heard about this band for a long time and The Big Damn Band did not disappoint. This was a high-octane performance from beginning to end. The Band consists of Josh 'The Reverend' Peyton (guitars, lead vocals), 'Washboard' Breezy Peyton (washboard, harmonica, percussion), and Ben Bussell (drums, five gallon plastic bucket).

The Reverend is a master guitarist who plays a dobro resonator, a three string cigar box, a Gibson flat top, and an Eastwood, Airline Map electric guitar. It was absolutely amazing to hear the huge sound that the 'Rev' could get out of a cigar box. He stuck his thumb in the air and explained that his thumb is his bass while his fingers play the melody simultaneously. His fret hand slides up and down the neck of the guitar creating the richest of sounds. (Its hard to believe that he was told by doctors that he would never play again after he finished high school due to scar tissue. Years later he did have corrective surgery.)

The sound is a blend of Delta and country blues that reaches the core of your emotions. The Reverend insists that you must clap, stomp your feet and sing along with them and you DO! This music delivers with absolute authenticity! The show culminated with Breezy setting her washboard on fire and left the audience clamoring for more.
